I think most people know about this, but just incase someone doesn't know about it, I will post the information about it.

Microsoft has issued a recall for the power cord on Xbox's manufactured before October 23, 2003. From what I have read there have been a few cases where the console malfunctioned and the cord became hot and melted the carpet on which the console was sitting. There was even one case where an entertainment center caught fire. So this may be a worthy thing to check out. Click this out (here for more information on the subject. Microsoft is offering free replacement cords for those that qualify and you can order yours at xbox.com. You will need your Xbox's serial number and manufacture date to complete the order.

I received my new plug and it has a plug in much like the plug in of a hair dryer or GFCI type plug in. Thought it funny though that it came with a 6 page instruction manual.

Yeah, I had to re-arrange my power strip just to be able to plug the thing in where I have my xbox.

Although, after reading llamma's (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Xbox%20Power%20Cord%20Fire%20Hazard%20Recall.htm) article, I don't think it's the power cord thats at fault. Microsoft is "of course" denying any faulty soldering problems. But I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure it out.

This happened to my Xbox about 7 months ago, it would start smoking and popping when i powered it on, but when i opened it up, it turned out my solder joint had come loose and burnt up a bit. So i re soldered it myself and its worked fine ever since.
