I have an issue with the litle fan that sits over my bios chip, it's started spinning inconsistantly. It'll spin for a second, suddenly slow down, then spin fast, then spin slow. The sound is really annoying and I'm a bit worried.

I tried cleaning out the fan for dust etc and that's fine. Could it be an issue with the fan being knackered or maybe power being supplied to it from the board?

For now I've unplugged it but obviously that's not a long term solution.

Cheers!

Some fans are temperature controlled so they will spin faster when the temperature goes up and slower when it's down.

However, I doubt that's your problem.

I've also never heard of a fan on a Bios chip. They don't get hot enough to require one.

Are you sure it's the Bios chip?

Sounds like a wasps nest, dunnit?? A short-term solution is to take it out, peel off the sticker over the bearing and put ONE DROP of oil in. That should quieten it down until you buy a new fan to replace the duff one.

Wouldn't fly spray work better?

Oil wouldn't kill them, just make them sticky.

I don`t believe in indiscriminate killing - just quiet them down till the wasps` nest is replaced. Then with the new, quiet wozzers home in place you can chuck the old one on the fire and hear them screeeeem! :D
