I'm about to re-format my friend's pc - OS is Windows 98. I'm not a techie by any means and need a little info about this CD-ROM driver. She has a Lite-On Ltr-24102B CDRW but there is no driver installed. The CDROM is D drive and is available in My Computer. If I insert a pre-recorded CD it opens it fine. However if I put in a writable CD I get the message that D drive is not in use. If I try Send To, there is also no D drive available.
I went on the web to see if there should be a driver and I downloaded R245S5A.zip from www.opendrivers.com. Unzipped it and think I installed it - "think" i say because it was different from any installation I''ve done before - had some kind of FLASH utility not the regular installation format.
Anyway, on checking the driver tab for the CD-ROM in Device Manager it still says there is no driver installed.
Any real help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

From what I remember about Win98 is that it won't need a driver. However, to access CDRW media you will need something like Nero's INCD or Roxio's Drag2Disc (was called something else a few versions ago but my memory ain't what it used to be). Without either of these apps you won't be able to do much with a CDRW. Unless it was written on another PC and you just want to read it. However it must have been closed/finalised when it was ejected.

CD drives don't require drivers. Windows has native support for all optical drives (CD and DVD drives and burners etc) and has done since Windows 95.

What that means is you just physically install the drive and Windows will do the rest.

To burn anything you will need software like Nero or EasyCD etc. (XP has a basic burning utility included)
