After I flashed my bios I have found that my cd writer(MSI CD-RW S-8348) does work but will detect normal cd's and run them for example the windows xp cd but will not detect blank cd-r or cd-rw disks. I have been unable to copy information to cd for some time. My motherboard is an MSI KT4V, the BOIS version is v1.3.
Can anyone offer a solution to this problem. I would think the problem will be a bios setting but im not sure and have tried everything I can think of.

This could be a laser issue.
Try this before anything, it should save you time.
Is there LEDS on the drive? If so check to see what they do when you enter the XP CD that works, make note on how the flash.
Now remove the IDE cable from the CD-Writer, so you only have the power cable connected. Power up the system and place a blank disc in the drive, how does the LED's react? If they do they same as reading the XP disc then your CD-Writer is fine, if not you could have a laser fault, the only thing I could suggest at that point is to upgrade the Firmware of the CD-Writer and if the problems persists then the drive needs replaced.

Update the firmware for the drive, you may want to install the latest BIOS update as well as a precaution.
