A couple of reasons spring to mind.

A badly fragmented HD could be a cause of slow burning but the most likely is that for some reason DMA is no longer set to on (UDMA2 for a DVD writer, UDMA5+ for a HD).

I need to know some details.
What operating system?
What is your DVD Writer (Make & model) & when did you install it?

OK then.

Firstly defragging your HD. Open My Computer & right click on your HD. Select Properties & then Tools. Defragmentation is the 2nd option. You should do this regularly.

DMA problem (the most likely cause).
Go into control panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
You'll see Primary & Secondary Channels.
In turn double click each of these & take the Advanced Settings tab. There's a setting for the master & slave devices (device 0 & device 1). For any attached device transfer mode should be DMA if available & current transfer mode should be Ultra DMA (mode 5 or 6 for HD & 2 for DVD writer).
I would suspect that your DVD writer is showing PIO, and if it is then try to change to DMA if available.

Check & report back.

If its on PIO, you can delete it, restart your computer, set it to DMA.

Or try this after you backup your registry:
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA).

Not that it will help much but there's a registry patch that lets Nero display the true burn speed.

1. Start-> Run-> type Regedit
2. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder"
3. Go to Edit-> New -> DWORD Value
4. Rename "New Value #1" to "ShowSingleRecorderSpeed"
5. Click on it and select "Modify"
6. Now set the value 0 to 1

Did you check this as you've never said?

Are you using a different media? Nero's cd-dvd speed can tell us what the media ID is. Please do this & post the result.

Also Nero's info tool can give a log of all devices etc. Please do this & post the resultant log.
Maybe with all this extra info we can help more.

Well nothing wrong so far.

Have you installed any new software recently?

What's happening to the CPU usage, is it high? I'm just wondering in some spyware or virus has got installed. Otherwise I'm running out of ideas.

Presumably you're burning from one of the on-board HD's, or is it from a USB device?
