What are your experiences with generic laptops compared to brand names?

I'm trying (like everyone) to find the cheapest-and-best laptop that I can get, and after scourging the internet I've come to the conclusion that Dell, VAIO, Fujitsu-Siemens, even Acer basically offer the same things as less well known names (jewel laptops, for instance) for much more money.

I refuse to believe, however much I would like to, that all that extra cost comes from the name only. You only get the name after you make good things, no? There must be some reason to buy a brand name over a smaller one, and the only one I can think of is that with Dell at least I'm SURE that what I get will work like they promise.

I'm just so damn cheap... If I can spend E1500,- on a good computer I could just as well spend E1500,- on a better one, granted everybody will ask me where I dug it up... But is it worth it? How much do you generally rely on a brand name when you buy stuff?

Hello,

IMHO on the whole, name / noname, as far as the hardware within the lappy is concerned, it's all the same. The only differences your going to come across are :

(a) How well the laptop has been built (and if when you got it, it works, then it's as good as any other)

(b) The specification (but your in charge of that)

(c) The level of support provided by the laptop seller.

All this being said, Sony do make a lovely lappy in the VIAO but upgrading may be expensive :)

Compaq/HP as you may know are the same and I'd stay away from them as i imagine they use odd memory, etc to make you go back to them in the future.

Asus laptops are very good, especially thier global support.

Fujitsu/Seimens ? On a par with HP/Compaq.

Acer ? Probably less so !

Hope this helps?

Office Depot has Vaios, very nice onces just hit clearance, $652.01 (01= first stage)....in store only.

Dell doesn't make any parts that I know of other than a case, the rest they get from other manf's. Its probably the same with other laptop manfs.
