We ( DJ's) can now purchase a Digital PPL Licence for the princely sum of £250 + vat ( for 12 months)this entitles you to LEGALLY download MP3s
( from Legal Scources) , and/or Transpose the tracks from vynl, cd,tape into mp3 and put them on a hard drive and use them for our disco's.
the amount you can have on a drive (total) is 20,000 tracks.
I believe i a right in saying that, THIS DOES NOT COVER KARAOKE !!!.

So the question is WHAT THE HELL LICENCE DOES !!!!.

If you play ANY music of any sort in a Public House or Club , or even a Shop! ,you have to have a PRS ( Performing Rights Licence ) Licence, even if it is only background/wallpaper Music you are playing,
and......... i dare anyone to tell me any different!!!!.

We issue licences to UK radio and television
stations, other broadcasters and internet radio
stations who use sound recordings (records,
tapes, CDs) in their transmissions.
We also license clubs, shops, pubs,
restaurants, bars and grills and thousands of
other music users who play sound recordings
in public. The PPL licence enables them to
play literally millions of sound recordings.
All licence fees that we collect are distributed
to the owner of the sound recording copyright
(usually the record company responsible for
producing the track) as well as the qualifying
performers who performed on the recording.





Do I need to join?


If you are a record company and your tracks
are broadcast on the radio or played in public,
you need to become a PPL member to ensure
you receive airplay royalties.
Likewise, if you are a performer, whether
you are a featured artist, session musician,
orchestral player or singer and any tracks that
you have performed on are broadcast on the
radio or played in public, you need to register
with UK Performer Services, a service division
within PPL, to ensure you receive any airplay
royalties that may be owed to you. If we don’t
know who and where you are, we are unable
to pay you.



The income we collect is split at track level
between the record company member and
the qualifying performers who played on
the track. In order to allocate the income at
track level, we process over 16 million track
plays each year.
An international service is now available to
both member companies and performers for
the collection of overseas public performance
and broadcast income from a growing number
of countries.
Over recent years PPL’s revenue has grown
significantly to exceed £80 million a year,
which makes PPL the largest collector
of this type of income in the world today.
PPL operates on a not for profit basis. The
actual costs of collecting the licence fees,
processing them and distributing the royalties
are taken from the gross revenue that we
collect but there is no additional joining fee or
subsequent administration charge. Our costto-
income ratio has reduced to almost half the
level it was 3 years ago.

on behalf of over 3,000 record
companies and 30,000 performers.

in the US, the laws are different.. The copyright laws for digital media states that you can KJ with mp3+G or any other form of media as long as you have the original copies of the disks. Meaning, you have to own the original songs to be able to convert and use them in mp3+G form on a hard drive.

Same with regular music.
