I'm looking for software to take our home movies on VHS and make dvd copies for the Grandparents. Any thoughts of DVD Wizard Pro, Dazzle or any other suggestions would be great!

Thanks in advance-

Even though you already mentioned it I thought I would still throw out there a recommendation for pinnacle. I've tried alot of different packages and pinnacle is by far the simplest to use and has the best interface. The only complaint I have is the lack of advanced dvd menus. You can make menus with a link to each chapter, but you can't link one menu to another. This is something most home users won't notice but I do video editing/authoring often. I'm hoping they will add this feature in the future, it might already be in version 10, I"m using version 9.

Ulead Video Studio works well also, but I just don't like the interface...

Its a lot faster & easier to just use a dvd recorder. They are $83 for a refurb from philips outlet, but circuit city also should have some under $100. No software is needed. Just plug your camera into the dvd recorder.

His home movies are obviously VHS. Or else he wouldn't be asking.

Yes...however, Handyguy is correct. With a DVD recorder, you can plug a vcr/video camera into the DVD recorder and just record everything. The only exception is if a tape is copy protected...and even that can be overcome.

Only problem with a dvd recorder is you have less options for editing. When going to the computer programs like Pinnacle make it easy to crop and edit the video footage as well as add minor special effects etc. While you can do some of this with a standalone recorder, you have more options and an easier to use interface with a computer...

why would he want to plug in his Video Camera when he has them on VHS?

Because the tapes can be played on his video camera as well as his vcr.

Hello Tom that interests me as I have just bought a VHS DVD player recorder so that I can archive all the VHS casettes that I have collected over the years and take up all my office space .However a waste of money because they all all protected .you suggest there is a way around this ,can you please enlighten me as to how ?????? Get a digital stabilizer. They might be sold is electronics stores near where you live but you can also buy them on ebay. The average cost appears to be $20-$40 CDN...depending on who's selling them. Good luck.

visit www.vhs-to-dvd.com/vhs-to-dvd.html and transfer your home video tapes to dvd.

You can get a pretty good conversion at a reasonable price from a lot of places. But what are most of these companies lacking? Care and attention to detail! Other ways you get totally amateurish product done with domestic equipment.

Several of our members here asked about the procedure to convert VHS to DVD without a video card. It's pretty easy for you to do it by your self if you have the following items (without an expensive video card) and follow the instruction below:
-----------------------------------
Hardware requirements:
1.Powerful PC for video capturing and edtting;
2.Firewire (I1394) port
3.Digital Camcorder with AV in/out
4.VHS player (VCR)

------------------------------------
Software requirements
1. Pinnacle Pro Plus or
2. Adobe Premier or
3. There are many other cunsumer level video editing software

--------------------------------------
Step-by-step:
1. Connect your VCR to the camcorder via the A/V In/out cable, usually it has a component interface to VCR or a s_video interface, remember to turn A/V (or s_Video) in/out to "ON", in the camcorder's menu function
2. Switch the camcorder to "PLAY" mode;
3. Connect the PC with Camcorder with a Firewire cable (I1394);
4. Power on the VCR player;
5. Power on the camcorder;
6. Open the video capturing software, even the standard Windows Movie Maker can capture the footage into AVI format file. - remember to capture into AVI, it's the best for archiving and editting, NOT Mpg-2 or any other formats.
7. Play the video tape from VCR.

in my next article I'll show you how to convert PAL tapes into NTSC DVDs. If you have any questions or need help, please don't hesitate to email me, If you are quote this instruction, please mention this is from CanaanMedia.com.
Good luck.
