I have a Sony unit that did the very same thing.
It would not play recordable DVDs (DVD±R) but would of course play pressed DVDs (DVD-ROM) just fine.
Solution:
I purchased a DVD Writer cabable of bitsetting (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150) which change to booktype on DVD+R discs to DVD-ROM. This fooled the Sony player into thinking that the disc is DVD-ROM and now it plays them all.
It's a compatibility issue.
Some standalone players will play DVD+R discs.
Some standalone players will play DVD-R discs.
Some standalone players will play both.
Some standalone players will play neither.
All standalone players will play DVD-ROM
