I have a notebook:
DEll Inspiron 6000
2,00 Ghz Pentium Mobile
Hard disk 100 Gb
1024 Mb DDR2+r
Windows Xp Home SP2

I have NERo 6.6.0.12 and Roxio 2.0.4. I have had the same problem with both softwares.
My problem is that the recording is always very long. For example, A dvd +R 4.7Gb can record it in 1 hour, when Nero detects the speed 8X.
The same DVD, Roxio detects 1.4x,1x and records it in 1 hour as well.

The report with Nero info TOols 3.00 is :

The problem is that DMA is off for your Sony burner.

DMA should be on for all optical drives and hard drives.

Go to Start, Run and type in devmgmt.msc then OK.

Under IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers, double-click the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, then go to the Advanced Settings tab.

DMA should be on, and the higher the number, the better. PIO mode should not be used.

I had the same issue and fixed it by up****** my driver with a generic CDrom driver. It maintained the default sony driver, just gave it the properties it needed to read a plain old CD.

Just go into your device manager, DVD/CD-ROM drives, Right click on the Sony drive show and select update driver, the select No, not this time, install from a specific location, Select Dont search.., select CD-ROM drive and select next. You will be good to go after that.:luxhello:
