hello,
I have a problem with my dvd-rw
I have a sony laptop vgn-fe550g
with a sony dvd rw dw-q58a.
so I was trying to burn a music cd from i-tunes, but I canceled it when it started burning. after that, it can only play and burn dvds but cannot read any music cds. I tried restarting it, updating and reinstall the dvdrw but nothing worked. when I put a music cd, it tried to read it for about a minute, then it stopped and ejected.
please help.

I have the same problem except I have a "LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S". I dont know if it was anything to do with iTunes though however for some reason one day my drive decided that it can only read DVD's. No CD's work in it at all wether it is a music cd or just a data cd for a computer game. :bawling:

Same thing for me on a Vaio FS940. Same model drive. Following a failed CD burn, DVDs work but CDs are not recognized. Frustrating suff. Will contact Sony support and see what they say.

Sony chat support did not help at all. Using system restore to go to a restore point set the day before the problem started did not help. Would reloading the OS help? Or is this a hardware issue somehow? Anyone....????

If running XP have you tried to delete the DVD drive from device manager and rebooting so XP can install fresh drivers.
If it's still the same try deleting the upper and lower filters as discribed here

But remember that if you dont know what you are doing in the reg, get someone that does.

At first, thanks for the ideas @ chandler68
I tried both, but it didnīt work.
Iam not sure, if Iīve the same problem. It is really strange:
Original DVDs, burned audio & data CD-Roms work
Burned Data-DVDs [Havenīt tried burned FilmDvDs yet], original audio & data CD-Roms donīt work:confused:
I would try the drive in an other PC but itīs a laptop Lenovo and you cant change the drives of this one.:bang:
I removed itunes from my laptop (Could be the same cause of the problem, like fuminaga02 described)
Every new idea is appreciated,
Varu
