So yes, I'm sure this topic is quite annoying now :hdspin: Many good men have toiled over the mysteries of that which I am about to reveal. Let us take a moment of silence....:clown:

Alright, on topic.

So if you're still reading, thanks!

My situation is not that uncommon from looking at these threads. However, I've tried looking through some of these suggestions and seeing if they could apply but since I'm not very computer savvy I thought it'd be safer to just ask straight out if anyone could help me.

Lemme give the MOST information I can give that I think will be useful:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Registered to yours truly

Computer:
Intel Celeron processor
1.10 GHz, 384 MB of RAM

The odd 384 MB of RAM is because recently I had more RAM added but the motherboard is so old that they couldn't put it to 512, but 384 is better than 256.

I also had another drive put into it (149 or something GB).

This is how it all started (way back):

A couple of years ago I got the computer (it was a Windows 98 then) and we had upgraded to an XP. Worked great. We then decided hey what the heck? Why not get a burner? (I guess apparently you can have one CD-ROM that does all things, I didn't know er well my dad didn't know). We added a second CD-ROM drive that is the burner while the one on top is the one where we can put audio cds, data cd's and install stuff (although the WEIRD thing is about a month ago I reformatted my computer again because first only have 20 GBs, I had so much junk and just wanted to start over new and when I put the Windows XP CD in the top drive, it said it wouldn't boot from that but it did however boot from the CD-ROM we use to burn! HMM!)

Well anyway, recently, like about a week ago, I had the RAM and second drive added. But it wasn't until today when I wanted to put an audio CD onto the computer that I realized the icons were missing! (Although I saw there was a jack on the top CD-ROM so I put my headphones in and viola, the music was playing but not registering on the com!!)

So I tried the Help and Support thing in Windows, and it says "Drives and Network Adapters Troubleshooter What problem are you having?" and I clicked the one that says "My CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive does not work" but it didn't really help, I wasn't understanding (because I am not smart ;__; )

Then I tried as someone else had suggested and did Start, Run, Regedit and went and deleted some stuff and when I restarted, nothing changed (except my self-esteem XD lol).

So now I'm kind of at a loss of what to do. Do I kill the guy that f*d it up in the first place? lol kidding, but maybe not. XD

I'd love your guys' help!!!

Here are some pictures::::

That is mine and before I got the drive, the icons I KNOW were there.

This is actually an screenshot from my FATHER's computer (which is near mine, they're all connected on the same network). His is set up the same way as mine, as in, he has two CD-ROMs also, the bottom one used as the burner. The only difference is he has only one drive::::

I'm not sure if this will be helpful but::::

IF YOU CAN HELP ME THEN OMG :luxhello: THANK YOU!!!!

If not well then bugger XD

Thanks again!!!!!

Are the drives listed correctly in Device Manager? (start, run and type in devmgmt.msc )

Try uninstalling all burning software.

The drives appear to be fine, but the DVD/CD-ROM thing is missing.

Also, as mentioned, I reformatted my computer so I don't have any burning software put onto it (well, it already comes with Windows Media Player which can burn CDs, but I'm not sure if that would count).

Thanks again for your help :)

You said you tried the registry edit?

I'm assuming it's where you delete the upper and lower filters?

Anyway, I'm too dumb to fully digest your post at the moment, so I may say something you have already explained.

It sounds like when you installed the second unit, you didn't set the jumpers correctly?

Both optical drives (CD/DVD) should be on the secondary controller, with the correct Master/Slave setting.

Both hard drives should be on the primary controller, again with the correct Master/Slave setting.

Are the drives detected in the Bios?

Hahaha don't feel bad, I'm probably not making sense anyway XD

Well see I had the computer taken in to install both the new harddrive and RAM.

When I go into BIOS, it says something like (this is from memory so sorry if it's a bit off lol):

master device 1[some odd amount of MBs, like 402789 MB]
master slave 1[149 GB or something]
Secondary Master [NONE]
Secondary Slave [NONE]

Something like that lol

Either way I don't believe it's registering that there are CD-ROMs.

We're getting closer at least.

If it's not detected in the Bios, it has nothing to do with Windows, so that narrows it down somewhat.

Double check the jumper settings and cables. It's almost certain to be your problem.

Sorry for taking so long to get back at you! =D

But THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You pointed me to the right direction by letting me know that it was the cables/jumpers that weren't placed right!!

So yeah, I know literally NOTHING about computers and I'm sitting there and I says, what the hell? And I opened my computer and messed with some stuff here and there (using my dad's computer to look at pics of where the jumper goes...of what the jumper even LOOKS like XD)

And what do you know??? I FIXED IT!

=D!

Thanks again!!!!!
