I've never heard of this before, but when my CD burner is not being actively used, it tries to read an empty drawer. The light comes on and if my spkrs are on, I can hear a "stuttering" sound as if the drive is trying to read. It stops after 3 or 4 seconds but will repeat this behavior every 4-6 minutes or so. There is no discernible pattern frequency-wise and no pattern as to what program is running when it happens... it happens ALL the time.

I've already eliminated Startup items and Processes and it still does it. The only time it doesn't is when I tried booting up in SAFE MODE, then and only then did it not do this.

If I am running a computer game in my DVD drive, the CD unit will do this and it causes the game to stall for as long as it attempts to read the empty drawer, then the game returns to normal..... HELP!
