Looking for a good video card that plays in 1024 x 768 as my monitor supports this high and no higher. I want a nvidia one but I don't want to go out and buy a big card and find out im wasting my money on it.

First thing you need to establish is whether you have an AGP slot or PCI Xpress? (Assuming your motherboard even has one)


A 7600GT can easily play any current game at 1024 x 768 at full detail, and isn't expensive.

Don't get an SE or LE version as they aren't as powerful. It needs to be a GT.


DirectX 10 is being released in the next couple of months, so the card you buy now won't support it, and games being released in the near future will require this.

oops forgot to mention it. Pci-xpress... I do have a 7600GT and price is no issue. Im just looking to upgrade so I don't have worry about it in about 2 years. I was looking at the top of line card 8800gtx and omg is that thing wicked and I see its cost about $600+ thats enough to get x4 7600gt, but as I said I don't want to upgrade in awhile if I get this card (8800gtx) but if I can get a sli motherboard and 2 cards that equal the 8800gtx then that will be excellent. It would also cost less too.

If your monitor can only support 1024 x 768, then a 7600GT is all that's required.

An 8800 is pointless and a waste.


Also, top of the line cards need comparable hardware.

No point installing an 8800 in a P4 1.8 as the CPU, RAM and bus will be the bottleneck.

well I happen to have an Amd athlon 64 x2 3800+ and p4 3.0ghz and memory is 533mhz so I know I should be fine with that card anyways. I think I'll buy a new monitor than.
