when I boot up, I get this message disk consistency in partition P, suggest disk scan by Win XP SP2. I am using two different file system. On my new boot hard drive, it is NTFS. On my secondary hard drive,it was formatted as Fat 32. How do I enable disk scan in Win XP Pro? I tried looking under system tools and it is not available like in Win98SE. Do I need to reformat this partition in order to get rid of this message during boot up? Thanks

Start, run and type in cmd then OK.

At the Command Prompt, type in chkdsk c: /r (Where c: is the drive/partition in question).

It may take a while, and you may have to reboot or do it several times, but hopefully it should resolve the issue.

If not, I would format and start again, only this time try not to have a FAT32 partition on the same drive as NTFS.

Separate drives would be ideal if you have to run both OS's.

Thanks, Insomniac, for your info, Fat32 file system was used in my seperate older hard drive. The NTFS was installed in a new hard drive when I upgraded my OS. This message never came up until I transferred some files from my new hard drive to my old. I guess the file transfer did not goes smoothly. But is it okay to use two different file system. I know Win XP can address both file system.

As I said, it's better having FAT32 and NTFS on separate drives.

If that's not possible, then just make sure you regularly backup important files.

It's generally OK, but not ideal to have them on the same drive.

Thanks, Insomniac, your assistance much appreciated:cheers: After running chkdisk, the message during boot up is gone. Still on a learning curve with Win XP pro.

You're welcome, glad it worked. :luxhello:

Speaking of a learning curve, Vista has just been released, so as soon as you catch up on XP, you can look forward to more of the same. :)

I just hope Vista isn't another Windows ME.
