I'm completely confused about what to look for in a new DLP HD TV. What is confusing me is 1080P. Directv tells me that their signals do NOT include the 1080P signal. I do see a difference in the 1080P picture when compared to 720 or 1080i in the stores. One salesman tells me the conversion to the 1080P quality is done within the TV itself. Is this true? Am I really going to be receiving 1080P quality from the signal I get from Directv? Any help would be appreciated.

The difference is 2 fold, 1080p is a higher resolution then 720p, most current HD broadcasts are 720p. That resolution is 1280x720 (16x9) for 720 and 1980x1080 for 1080. I and P stand for interlaced and progressive, progressive scan displays motion better because of the way it refreshes the pixels. Currently, 1080p set would be nice if you can get it to last you for another 5-10 years, when they do have the bandwith to start broadcasting it, although blueray is true 1080p and it looks amazing. If you dont have good eyesight, or dont worry about seeing all the hairs on someones face from 2 inches from the screen, dont worry about getting 1080, get a set that does 720p and you should be fine.
