I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

I have an IDE ATAPI CD-RW 40/12/48X [CD-ROM drive] which was installed when purchased several years ago and has worked fine.

The problems began when I installed Roxio Easy Mediator Creator V9 which caused problems in recognising the drive. I then un-installed Roxio which has left the following problem.

Although the drive is recognised in Windows Device Manager and reported as working OK – it is not. When I insert either a data CD or a music CD the LED on the front of the drive blinks continuously for 2/3 minutes. Eventually a dialogue box appears headed ‘Audio CD (F:)’ asking which media player do I want to play the disc with (even though it may be a data disc) If I then select, for example, Windows Media Player, a further dialogue box advises that the selected file has a scheme not recognised by the player and is unable to play it (even if it is a music CD.) Examining the file on the disc with file explorer always shows the disk as having a ‘.cda’ music file even though it may be a data disc. ( I am also unable to right click the drive with explorer.)

I have un-installed Roxio, done several registry cleans with two different products, applied the known Microsoft fix for Roxio which removes the upper and lower filters in the registry but still no joy. ( I also have a SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616T drive which works OK)

Help!!

Try uninstalling the drive in question, then reboot and let Windows reinstall it.

If that fails, do you have another PC you can try the drive in?

If not, try swapping it with the DVD drive.

Thanks for your response.
I tried both your suggestions but still no joy.
I have also tried a microsoft wizard - autofix_2007-06-28-51-53 which examines the auto insert notification parameters. The first part worked OK but then registered problems with 'legacy notification' and 'Autoplay V2 notification' and said it could not repair the problem saying either the device is malfunctioning or the wizard cannot determine the problem.

If you have tried swapping the drives around, or in another PC, and it still does the same thing, chances are the drive itself is malfunctioning.

A lens cleaner may help, and are fairly cheap.
