hi.

I just installed the internal ultra cd-rw, the Memorex
mrx523252. [52x]
win98se.
It seems to work fine except for one strange problem!

It reads game install disks and the game installs ok to my computer. it reads burned disks, burned with another computer's burner, better than my old cd drive could. But, when I play the game, if I insert the game disk and the auto-run begins the play/install window, that works OK, up to that point.
However for two games that I tested this memorex on, this new drive, the actual loading of the game itself stalls! This happens both from the splash screen or from the desktop shortcut. I have installed a new video card, just today, but the old one had the same problem! my cd-rw drive is also new.
I recently enabled DMA, i am planning to try this without DMA, maybe my sis741gx motherboard is not happy with DMA!

what else could this be?!
so far i have seen a few tips here, good tips to try, like uninstaling the Nero burning software that comes with the drive!:uhwell:

got to be able to read the gamefiles!

[edit]

I wonder if the nero program that i installed with this drive, to burn cds, stalls the reading as there is a "copy-protection" problem with nero?!

maybe i better remove this here nero!

?????
any observations, people?!

thanks...freestone

It doesn't really sound like a problem with the drive itself.

Inserting the CD in the drive is only for verification. Once that's done (only takes a sec), the game loads from the hard drive, and not from the CD/DVD drive.

That's not true for every game, but for the majority. Only old games load from the CD/DVD drive.

Even then though, it's only when the game is in full swing (when you're actually playing, and it needs files to continue).

When it's initially loading, it's from the hard drive.

Sounds like a problem with drivers, DirectX, or compatibility.

Does your PC meet the games requirements?

What version of DirectX do you have?

Have you tried updating your motherboard, video card, and sound drivers?

*A quick way to tell if it's a problem with the CD or not, is to use a No CD patch so you don't require the CD/DVD in the drive to play.

Use a search engine for locations. For example The sims 2 no cd.

If it still does the same thing with a No CD patch, then it's definately not the CD/DVD drive.

thanks Insomniac for your post.

I finally fixed this!
:luxhello:

the Clue was that the "program flow" for the loading of morrowind game, gave the tip. as this game loads, each step of the loading way is documented in a file. I could see that the load stopped at the video card.

the people who installed the new motherboard, did it "cheaply" as when my old motherboard died, a month ago, the death took down most of the computer and they had to install a new sound a video card, but all they had was a pci gforce 5200, and they probably did not install the AGP drivers for the new SIS motherboard!

when I wnr to their site, and downloaded the drivers and installed them, NOW
morrowind loads up ok!

never ever take something for granted, if you know enough about computers, you can do it yourself!

while a new motherboard is a bit beyond me due to no workspace to properly install it, a computer is only "PARTS"!
each and every part can be traded off.

like that car that went 1,000,000 miles, back in the 60s, when a car did not get over 100,000 miles, but everything in this car but the frame was replaced over and over again.

in a computer, the only non-replacible stuff is the files on the hard drive.

anyway, tis fixed, i guess.

Good work, glad to hear it's sorted. :)
