Hi, I found this forum today to see if I couldn't possibly fix my CD-RW drive--which won't work since I tried to copy some pics to a CD-R & did it the wrong way. Apparently it hated what I tried-- this was in June.
Would like this device to work again-- I have checked for updated drivers & MSoft reports I have the latest. The model is: in a Dell- HL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE 84838 . I note that my 2nd Drive, a DVD drive, as a 1 (1) in the location under device mgr. But this one now reads "0"-- zero. Did I somehow disconnect the computers ability to detect it-- but it says it does detect it and its working properly (Device Mgr. diagnostics report again).

I tried to take a CD-File & move the icon over to the CD recording software-- as you can do with some Windows XP files. This was obviously the wrong thing to try for copying files onto a CD, but I was in a big hurry & forgot!

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. I'm a novice, esp. at hardware & I don't ever mess around with the operating systems.

All "location 0" means is the bus number, as in whether it's a Master or Slave drive. Nothing is wrong with the display.

Regarding the driver, you don't need to worry about them for CD/DVD drives, and they aren't made anyway.

Windows has native support, meaning it has all the files required, and no extra or updated drivers are required.

In Device Manager, try right-clicking the drive in question, uninstall and reboot.

Windows will reinstall the device, and hopefully resolve the issue.

If that fails, try deleting any files waiting to be written in My Computer.

It's under File or Edit menu, I think.

You haven't really stated the exact problem or error message, so I can't offer further advice.

However, if you're using the built-in burning program in XP, it's very basic.

Try a dedicated program. For free, CDBurner XP Pro, and paid programs, something like Nero Burning Rom or Easy Media Creator.
