I think this is a codec problem anyway. I have the fast and the furious on DIVX, when i play it in windows 2000 the sound is fine, crystal clear, but when i run it in windows 98, the sound is a bit muffled, it sounds lower quality, like its a lower bitrate. i've installed Windows media Player 7.1, and have installed both divx 3.11 and divx 4.12.

have you tried updateing your sound card drivers ? its possible the drivers may not be fully up to the task --especially if its an older card that maybe only can handle 22400mz and most rips are at like 41400mz
besides never hurts to keep them updated anyway
