I don't know if one is exactly better than the other. There's no difference in video quality at all between the 2. The space capacity of blu-ray will allow to inlcude more data such as uncompressed audio etc. However at the moment, it seems like blu-ray is going to win the format war. With the recent announcement from Warner and newline to support blu-ray exclusively, blu-ray now has 5 of the 7 major movie studios supporting blu-ray exclusively. If you buy a hd-dvd player, you won't be able to get most movies as they will only be released on blu-ray. Prices of hd-dvd players have dropped after the Warner announcement but I think it's mostly a last ditch effort to try to get as many sales as possible before hd-dvd loses. Do a search online and you will find everybody but Toshiba has practically announced blu-ray as the winner.
