This duscission is extremely old.....
The cap is not on your computer, it's at the main box where your isp actually jacks into the net. There's nothing you can do about it, without physically messing with THEIR computers. You can increase your speed though quit a good bit through registry entries and other various methods. www.dslreports.com is a good site to start with..

uncapping is and isn't a myth. any app that tells u it will uncap your modem is crap, it just changes the mtu settings. check dslreports.com as mentioned earlier, they have tests to help you optimize your mtu. but certain cable networks are able to be uncapped, @home i don't beleive is one of them, sorry :(. the way it works is your modem boots up sends out a broadcast (or it's hardset on the modem) to get what's basically a config file. it tftp's it from your cable companies docsis server and applies the settings. that config file is what sets everything up for you. now the object is to change that config file. unfortunatly most cable companies (especially large) will as soon as the config file is dl'd turn off the snmp/telnet/http interface. this is how you'd know if it's turned off, 1st ping 192.168.100.1 if you get no responce then everything is disabled, there's a couple tricks like changing your ip to 192.168.100.2 and seeing if you can communicate, but i won't go into those here. so if everythings turned off while your plugged in your kinda screwed (which is the case for 90% of the world), but fear not there are other options for those people. I've heard of a cable company in england that has diff. types of connections, ie, basic, advanced, corprate. so when the modem boots up it dl's a specific file, if your modem is set for basic it will dl the basic config file, but if u can get on the modem and change your setting to dl the corprate file then chances are you'll be getting a heck of a lot more speed. so how do we do this, same as before...you need to get on the modem. disconnect your cable line (the coax not utp), shut down the router. now power it back up. try and ping 192.168.100.1, if it don't work then change your ip 100.2, and try again. if you can get a ping 1st try a http connect, go into your browser and type in 192.168.100.1, hopefully you'll get a config screen that pops up =). if not you can try and get it through snmp using dosisdiag and see what you can change, i don't know exactly cuz i don't know what modem what setup u have or anything. chances are any change u make will be overwritten...ie dl/ul settings...the only real thing you'll be able to do here is change the setting for basic/premium/etc.... mind u that will only work if your cable company offers diff. packages. and it's not gonna be just basic/premium....there will be a filename specifing what config file to get. the file name could be anything so you'll have to figure out the naming scheme....ie.. basic.cm, premium.cm. So if your real interested in doing it try the methods mentioned above, but don't hold your breath. there's alot info out there on this, you just gotta sort through the crap uncap applications to find it.

here's a link to a dosicdiag http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/docsdiag/

here's a link with a bunch of info, especially for ntl and blueyonder cable. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips.html

hope this makes sence i didn't read it after i wrote it and i have a tendency to ramble :round:
