tazzyd2000 Feb 20, 2002, 09:46 AM Hey I have been trying for quite a while now..
I keep downloading AVI files from the net and cant figure out how to convert them to mpeg or something that Nero will write
Nero wont recognize the format and neither will NTI so cant use them to convert the file... Yes the file does work very good quality as well
have downloaded a few different programs that were supposed to convert them over but they usually are for formats other than AVI
can someone tell me a surefire program that will convert them or
please tell me a Program that will write them if I am doing it wrong
HELP !!!!

ZJones Feb 20, 2002, 11:40 AM Here is the scoop
The FAQ's over at www.vcdhelp.com are very good and they address the basic things that you need to create a VCD that is compatible with most DVD players that can read CDR media and VCD formats.
However...
The process takes time to learn. I spent an entire week on one movie and in the end did not get it done...
If you dont want to spend 10-12 hrs only to find that you have a blank screen, then I suggest the following...
If you have an AVI that you can watch on the computer and your goal is to watch stuff on your computer then stick to the AVI files. The compression is better and the higher resolution will fit on one or two discs and be very watchable on the computer...
If you have an AVI that you can watch on the computer but your goal is to copy that to VCD format for puposes of watching on your DVD player then TMPGenc is the software that you want. If you use the "select range" filter, then you can encode a short 5min piece of the movie and burn it for purposes of testing. This costs a disc, but that is only about $0.10 if you know where to shop and well worth it if it releaves the agrivation of spending 10hrs on a rip only to have a blank screen.
The other piece of software that you need is NERO5.5. It has presets for VCD that will create the necessary auto run files and the proper information for inclusion with your mpg file. This program is worth the money that it costs...
Hope this helps... good luck... IF you have questions after reading and working with the FAQ, post em here. The people of this form are very good at giving answers...

celtic_druid Feb 20, 2002, 05:10 PM Make sure that if the AVI uses DivX 311alpha that the DivX 3 playback filter is used and NOT the DivX 4 playback filter..
aaronjon Feb 20, 2002, 08:45 PM if you don`t see the movie encoding when you start tmpgenc. then your file has`nt been loaded correctly, if you just see a black screen then that`s what you`ll end up with.
speaky Feb 24, 2002, 06:24 AM argh! i can get the sound to work in TMPGenc but no video! why no video?? i am trying to get it to play in my dvd. speaky Feb 24, 2002, 07:44 AM I have 311 alpha installed!! :(:( i get sound but never any viedo and the only time in the last 8 months since i started trying to do this di i ever get video preview was with the fast and furious but i deleted it accidentally and no avi file since has given me a preview whereas on virtualdub it does play the file but not in TMPGEnc GRRR its very erm... frustrating! :(
speaky Feb 24, 2002, 07:47 AM and where about is the "select range" filter option? i am running TMPGEnc-0.11.20.98- and have the english patch in - i load either the vcd PAL or NTSC templated and try either preview or straight encode and no video from either, just audio!
PH/\T B,5TARD Feb 24, 2002, 12:21 PM This is how I do it, very rarely fails :)
Some of this is cribbed other bits are my own....
Making VCD's From AVI’s
Step 1
How I convert divx movies.
· Open the file up in Virtualdub and…..
· Under audio select full processing mode.
· Under conversion select 44,100.
· Under compression select none (pcm).
· Then File/Save wav (this file will be huge, don't worry at least 1gb for 700mb divx).
· It will take 2-6 min to rip the audio.
· Wait until it has completely finished (can take a few moments).
· Close Virtualdub.
Step 2
· Open up Tmpgenc (T-MPG-ENCODER) and…
· Point the Video Source to the .avi (see footnote for problems).
· And the Audio Source to the .wav you just ripped.
· Hit the load button and load the corresponding template.
· If the movie 23.97fps load Video-CD NTSCFILM (MPEG-1).
· If the movie is 29.7fps then load Video-CD NTSC (MPEG-1).
· If the movie is 25fps then load Video-CD PAL (MPEG-1).
· Do not select SVCD (MPEG-2) otherwise Nero will not burn the finished VCD without a special codec you have to purchase from them.
· Select the destination file (field is automatically populated).
· Not sure what format the Movie is?…. check the .avi file
properties/summary in Windows)
· You can under settings/advanced change the aspect ratio if you want to alter it.
· Then Start it (can take between 1 ½ - 5 ½ hrs).
· Footnote:
Occasionally TMPGENC may throw up an error message when trying to open the .avi file….like this “cannot open file format unsupported” this I think is due to DivX files created with the DivX 3.11a codec or other codec’s it cannot read.
Try disabling AVI2(OpenDML) File Reader (Option/Environmental setting/VFAPI plug-in) this has worked every time for me.
Some Stats
For a 700mb divx (.avi) file
On a P3 550 256mb it can take about 5 1/2 hrs.
On an AMD 1.2 256mb ddr266 it can take about 1 1/2hrs.
On my overclocked Celeron 633@950 512mb PC133 it takes about 3hrs.
File Size
The completed MPEG will usually will be somewhere between 1.1gb and 1.5gb, depending on size of the original .avi.
This is obviously far too large for a single CDR….
There are various utilities to cut the file into 2-3 parts, (depending on completed MPEG size) to make them the right size to burn with Nero, I use TMPGENC.
You can also use VCDCUTTER or VIRTUALDUB whichever you prefer, a point to note though I have had several files which these two utilities could not read whereas TMPGENC could (probably because it created the file).
Have Fun

celtic_druid Feb 24, 2002, 12:53 PM One possiblity if you can't get TMPGEnc to recognise the AVI is to use AVIsynth to frame serve it.
PH/\T B,5TARD Feb 24, 2002, 02:29 PM Thanks for the tip celtic_druid, I'll try that.
tazzyd2000 Feb 24, 2002, 02:37 PM Thank you celtic_druid
I have had success......I am soooooo Happy
tazzyd2000 Feb 27, 2002, 05:19 AM ok so my success was a bit to quick
I have managed to convert to mpeg..
and even managed to edit and cut one to big
but when I write them with nero SVCD they dont work in vcd player (unknown disc)
and when written with reg vcd the vcd player registers it is playing but just stays on the vcd screen no pic and no sound... no nothing???
any clues... are my settings wrong on nero or what??
