i have messed around with my settings trying to get nero to work but it didnt help. anyway my problem at the moment is that my cd writer does not play audio cd's, i ran windows media player and it said something about it not being digital or something like that. but im sure before this it worked fine and my DVD drive plays audio cd's fine also.

Try this -

Go into Device Manager. Right-click on your CDRW drive and choose Properties. Click the Settings tab and make sure the box "Enable Digital CD Audio" or something like is checked. If not, check it and reboot. That could be the problem.

or it could be that your DVD ROM is wired to your sound card and your CD writer is not, open up your PC to check.

In Control Panel go into MultiMedia -> CD Music , select the drive & you should see an 'enable Digital playback' option.

Darkman M8,

You are right on. I was looking at Win2K Pro when I told him where to go.

Thanks for the correction.

Zack, no problem. What ever happened to the good old days when your choice of O/S was either DOS 6.2 or Windows 95?. Now there's a new O/S every two weeks and nothing's consistent!.

Raw take a look at my post "Cd Rom Won't Play Audio Cd's". Maybe there is something there that will help you.

Do you hear audio from the headphone output of the CD-RW? Check your volume controls. The TAD-in is actually for a telephone answering device, but can be used as an auxiliary input (I'm not certain of the input quality however).

There is also both an analog and a digital input. If either of your CD drives (the CD-RW or DVD-ROM) has a digital output you should use the digital input for it, and use the analog for the other device. If both have digital output plug yoyr prefered drive (the one you will use most for Audio CD listening) into the superior digital input. You will need a special cable to connect the digital input, if you can use it.

Whichever, inputs you use make sure you have unmuted and adjusted the corresponding volume controls.

thanks for the help everyone.
opened up my machine again and took a closer look and saw that my plextor which isnt working is connected to tad in, and my dvd which works is connected to CD-in. also looked on the back of my plextor drive and saw it had a digital output port but where would i plug the digital output into? i have a sound blaster audigy which on the top of the card has inputs for: cd-in, tad-in, aux-in, sb1394 and cd_spdif. also should i have got the digital cable with my plextor or do you have to buy it seperate?
thanks
