Hi Guys,

Can anyone help?

Just installed a Teac 540E Cd rom dive. It's supposed to extract audio at x 30 but I can't get more than x 10. I've installed the latest firmware & the cd speed program. I'm using AudioGrabber 1.81 and if I switch to my Plextor 12/10/32A, I get about x 27. If I enable DMA the pc locks up. I've tried other DAE progs but the results are the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

Win ME. 1.3 gig Athlon AMD. 256 Meg Ram.

Thank you

Scrote

Get CD Speed here http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=daetest.html to test the DAE capability of your drive.

With the Teac you need to use their utility to turn the speed up to Max and then open and close the tray from there via the button, in order for it to take effect.

Thanx Hoss,

I have tried this mate, but I still can't get more than x 10.78 !

I going to get on to Teac UK today and see what they say. This is a bummer really, I bought the drive purely on it's promise of fast DAE!

Thanx again lads.

i just got the Teac CD-540E last week... it's a great drive, IMO, in terms of DAE.

to get the 30x DAE, you need to go to the following URL and download the FIRMWARE update (3.0a) and also the expansion utility (to set the maximum speed setting)...

go here:

http://www.teac.co.jp/dspd/download/firmware/cd-rom/cd540e/fwcdrome.html

scroll down to the bottom of the page, download each file. now, make sure that you have "Auto Insert Notification" and "Disconnect" and "DMA" unchecked (Right-click on the My Computer icon, then click on the "Device Manager" tab > then click on CDROM and Right-click on your Teac CDROM > then click Properties)...

then run the Firmware update, and click "Yes" when it prompts you to restart your computer. after your computer restarts, run the speed utility, and set it to the maximum setting.

then reboot your computer, and put a checkmark for DMA, and reboot your computer (one last time ;-)).

after doing this, your drive should be able to rip a 79 minute audio CD right at 3 minutes 19 seconds (mine does) or even faster (this is using Exact Audio Copy in Secure mode, which is a bit slower than the drive's capability due to secure extraction).

hope this helps, let us know how you get along with updating the firmware.

Thanx Larry

That's a slightly different way of doing it and I'll certainly try it. Btw, just a thought, I've got the Teac slaved to my operating system hard drive on IDE 1 'cos my Plexor 12/10/32 is the master on IDE 2, which has a second hard drive slave to it, do you think this might be causing the problem?

Thanx again lads for all the input!

As an afterthought guys, is it ok to flash the same firmware on the cd rom drive again?

Ok first when you open the Teac CDROM utility is it showing the current set speed as x17 - x40? If so your good there.
If not try setting it again and make sure you open and close the tray once.
It's possible that the config could be affecting the DAE if your HD does not currently have DMA enabled. As long as your system can handle it and all newer can, DMA should be enabled for all drives.
While your current config is ok, most would slave the two HD's on IDE 1 and the two CD's on IDE 2

I don't think it would hurt to reflash it but as long as you have v3.0 and the speed change utility I see no sense in it.

Thanx Hoss,

Sorry I've taken so long to answer, I haven't been able to post lately, when I send the page just bombs!

Tried your suggestion with the DMA enabled on the hard drives but it made no difference.

Larry, I tried your way, to the letter, but no go! Whenever I enable DMA on the Teac, the PC locks up!

I wonder if the drive is faulty?

Thanx for your help anyway guys.

Connected the Teac to second IDE as master and got about x 19
(average x 13!!) so I guess there is something wrong with the drive?

Sure it's possilbe and I would say that is it if this doesn't do it. YOu don't per chance have a VIA Chipset in that Mobo that is using the 4 in 1 drivers do you? If so try updating them. Find info here

Thanx Hoss, I'll check out whether I have a VIA chipset, I don't think I have.

I was on to Teac support again this morning and the guy told me to make sure my BIOS setting on PIO 4 so, that's something else to try.

Thanx again mate for you help, it's much appreciated.

hmmm, very weird...

here's how my IDEs are set up:

IDE 1-
[Mobo]
[]
[]
[HDD, set as Master]
[]
[]
[DVDROM, set as Slave]

IDE 2-
[Mobo]
[]
[]
[Teac CD-540E CDROM, set as Slave]
[]
[Plextor 12/10/32A CDRW, set as Master]

and i get an avergae of 23x extracting audio using EAC (secure mode).

i'm not sure what else it could be, other than to look at Hoss's theory re: the VIA chipset...

now, you do know that you will not get 30x extracting the first part of the audio CD, correct? i usually get about 15x for the first few tracks, then it speeds up to 23-28x for the last 20 minutes of a full (74minute) audio CD.

:zombie:

Sorry to add to the pain - I bought one of these to go with Clone - it lasted 18 months and the laser stopped reading and my extraction was always slow - chop it in m8 - you've got the twin of my old one!

I think you are right, SR, I've tried everything. I do have a VIA chipset and I downloaded the latest drivers - no go ! Every time I enable DMA the whole thing locks up, I think I'll send it back.

Thanx once again guys for all your input.
