Having problems with burning everything APART from audio CDs, which work like a dream! System stops responding when I try to write a data CD no matter whether I use Nero 5.5.7.2, Easy CD v.5 or the built in CD authoring package with XP.

Software starts the burn off, and then the buffer fills up to c. 98%, then nothing - hangs. Reboot is required to get the system going again. Teac don't seem to have a firmware update for XP or Win 2000. Microsoft don't have any details regarding possible conflicts.

System is 1.3Ghz Athlon, 512Mb RAM, 70Gb HDD, CD-RW is on master secondary channel and has been since purchased the system. Interestingly enough it worked OK with Win ME, although ME was too flaky for my liking.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

There is a patch from MS for XP but I'm not sure it relates to this

Have a look

I have the exact same burner and I must say that it works like a dream under Windows XP. And you don't need that "CD Burners Update" from Microsoft.

I guess that the weak point in all this setup has to be your motherboard. What you have to do is find the right UltraATA Storage Drivers that are designed for your mobo & WinXP. If these are bad or you even cannot find find them, better leave the native windows drivers.

Also, "UDMA if available" must be selected for the burner.

Thanks for that- I d/loaded the CD Burners Update, but hasn't made any difference unfortunately. FYI I have a Asus A7A266 Socket A Mobo with 512MB DDR RAM.

Tried to find out where to change the UDMA if available option but can't find it - I know where it USED to be under Win98, but XP has got be beat. Any ideas?

I'm looking into the issue of the mobo drivers too. Thanks again for your help!

Choose Start -> Run -> Devmgmt.msc -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Secondary IDE Controller (same for Primary) -> Properties -> Advanced Settings -> Transfer Mode: set it to "DMA if available".

OK, checked that and both are set already as Use DMA if available. I did notice that both device 0 and device 1 use Ultra DMA 2 Mode (secondary channel) whilst the primary channel devices use Mode 5 and 4 respecitvely. Could this be the cause of the problem do you think?

Thanks for your patience!
