I'm looking to get a DVD player for my source, burning onto a Plexie 8432.
I had my little heart set on the LiteOn LTD-163, until I saw some places saying that this DVD player couldn't read CD-Text.
Can anyone help straighten me out?
Thanks!
Rob

According to the test of the Lite-On LTD163 16x DVD-ROM at cdrlabs.com Reviews (http://www.cdrlabs.com/review.php3?reviewid=60&page=Features),
Unlike many other drives I've tested lately, it can even read CD-Text.

Thanks. I saw that as well, but some places make a point to say no CD-Text. I was hoping somone had this drive.

I don't know what your sources are for the "no CD Text" information for this drive, but not all available information is correct.
The CD Speed Advanced DAE test has reported my Plextor 121032 as not capable of reading CD Text. This is incorrect I use it to read and write CD Text constantly.
The Feurio CD-ROM features list (http://www.feurio.net/English/cd_roms/list_ide_speed.shtml) reports that the Lite-On LTD163 does not read CD Text. It also reports that the Pioneer DVD 106 does not read CD Text. This is incorrect. I have this DVD drive and use it all the time to read CD Text.
My point is, you can't believe everything you read on the Web. Some of these "no CD Text" reports are obviously from sources that have not tested the drives first hand. The information may be gathered from MMC command responses from a drive. If the MMC inquiry or response is not implemented correctly, the information reported may be inaccurate.

so is the norm for DVD players to support CD-Text reading?

It isn't the "norm" for all DVD players, but I would say that it is common for newer DVD drives to support CD Text. I know that the BTC BDV 316B 16x DVD drive supports CD Text.
I suggest sending an email to Lite-On and asking them directly whether CD Text reading is supported on the LTD163. That way you should get a definitive answer.
