Which one gives the best all around results and why.
This is a very popular drive, so there must be a lot of opinions.

I agree 100%.

I've had a few problems with these drives that I've fitted in new systems, but as soon as I flash them with this firmware update everything works fine.

Some have said that it takes slightly longer to record certain discs (mainly protected) with "5S54" but I have found that it is less fussy about CDR brands/Speed etc.

Just remember to disable DMA before flashing your drive that's all, then re-enable after flashing.

burp,some manufacturers sites say disable DMA before flashing, they dont say why and I dunno so i just do

I must admit that I too do not know the exact reason why most CDRW makers say this when you flash, but I'm sure that Keymaster will know the answer.

Keymaster, if you read this could you please explain why.

i know m8,thats was just a typical complaint to liteon customer service department after a bad flash upgrade and that would be their reply,prehaps in dma mode it receives the data thats needed to program the chip bios too fast?maybe?

I think you'll find that the latest firmware has better compatibility with newer makes of blank discs,and i think it starts of tha max write speed a few mins earlier than older firmwares,but don't hold me to that one.

One thing with 5S54, you will find media that will only burn at 16x. (http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=cdrwb&action=display&num=1007200928) I know I went nuts with that.
