OK everyone here is a old question and blinky was so kind to post some advice from a earlier post about a week ago. Here is my problem, Using Nero and IN CD, I am running Windows xp pro. Nero works fine on CD-R's but when I try to format a CD-RW it goes through the process and at the end it gives me a error code, it says," Illegal Request Error, Reboot your system or drive and try again. Error code 00aa-0005-0024-0000. I have tried 2 different plextor drives, I have tried different CD-RW's. I have upgraded the firmware on the drives. I e-mailed Ahead about a week ago and still have not had a response. I have a promise controller on the board but had this board when I was running 98 and nero and had no problems then. This just started when I upgraded to xp. I had to change nero versions then also. I do have the latest version of nero and INCD. I know there are some smart crackers on this board, sure hope someone can help me with this one. It gives me the same error code on both drives.
Thanks in advance.

Thougth I would add this. I was just surfing the net to try to find something out and ran across this.
0x05 ILLEGAL REQUEST
Indicates that there was an illegal parameter in one of the SCSI commands. Since you do not have any direct influence on SCSI command creation, this sense key indicates a software bug or a serious communication failure between the software and the SCSI device
ALso this was mentioned also
0xAA END OF MEDIUM REACHED
disc is full
These things were in my error code. Don't have any SCSI devices so not sure what that means. Funny to me though it does CD-R's without a hitch, it is just the CD-RW's. Think if it was a communication problem it would be with CD-R's also. Hope this info helps.
Thanks again

Actually you do have a SCSI device of sorts. The Promise controller is probably showing up as a SCSI device. With this in mind you have 2 choices,
1 find a XP driver for the promise controller and see if that fixes it. 2nd, Try putting the cd burner on a different ide port. Put it on something other than the promise controller. 1 of these 2 should work.

The problem is with InCD. Your burner should be on a motherboard IDE channel and not connected to the Promise controller. The Promise controller should be used for hard drives only.
Have you checked to see if the CD-RW is successfully formatted in spite of the error message? Is is usable for packet writing with InCD after rebooting?
Try shutting down all unnecessary background applications before formatting to see if it makes a difference.
The "illegal request" error is symptomatic of a corrupted ASPI layer in other operating systems. Win XP is not supposed to need a traditional ASPI layer, but I would try the following to see if it works.
The file WINASPI32.DLL can be dowloaded from the Nero Download Page (http://www.ahead.de/en/download.htm). It is an ASPI driver tailored for Win XP and should be installed in the Nero folder. The direct file link is ftp://ftp.nero.com/wnaspi32.dll

Just wanted to say Thanks, I had the hard drive and the plextor on one side of the promise and a zip drive and sony cd on the other side of the controller. I just swapped the sony and plextor and now it works great. Can't tell you guys how much I appreciate the advice, been battling this one for a couple of weeks. Thanks again, I really do appreciate it.
