chubbito Jan 15, 2002, 09:39 PM Hey, I just built a new system...
WinXP
Athlon 1600+ w/ 256 ddr
Radeon w/ 64 meg sdram
I can't imagine the system being the reason why my dvd playback is jumpy, but I have no other idea why... I am using the updated drivers for my Radeon and the updated DVD player from ATI as well, both compatible with XP. I was trying to find where to check if DMA was enabled for my dvd drive, but I couldnt find the settings for it anywhere, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
brandonbooth Jan 16, 2002, 02:15 AM What DVD Rom drive are you using? I bought some generic one and it played like sh*t on my 1 Ghz T-Bird, but my DVR-A03 plays movies perfectly.
grandmaster_b Jan 16, 2002, 04:10 AM I had a problem similar to that, the problem was my sound card thats built in to my board loads this software instead of the standard systray(volume controls etc) so if you unload that from memory it works fine.
chubbito Jan 16, 2002, 11:23 AM im not sure what kind of dvd drive it is... but it came with my Dell when I bought that, in which DVDs would play beautifully. So when I built my new system, I took the DVD drive out of my Dell and threw it into this... Could it just be that ATI's dvd player sucks?
msmonteal Jan 16, 2002, 02:56 PM Windows Media Player in XP can play DVD's, have you tried using that?
chipman Jan 16, 2002, 09:42 PM Have you checked that the DMA on the hard drive is ticked
chubbito Jan 16, 2002, 10:19 PM I have not yet tried windows media player, i didnt know it could play dvd's. Where do I check if DMA is enabled for my drives in XP... I can't find it anywhere
chubbito Jan 16, 2002, 10:23 PM alright, i just tried it in win media player and it is still jumpy... so i guess its not a software problem...
out4zero Jan 17, 2002, 12:56 PM Okay here goes...
Open Device Manager and look for "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
Now click the + sign and you should see this or similar..
"Primary IDE channel"
"Secondary IDE channel"
Now right click the first one and go down to "properties" and left click this - you'll see the tab marked "Advanced settings"...
Now the good bit :)
Device type should be "Auto Detection" for both "Device 0" and "Device 1"
"Transfer Mode" should be "DMA if available" (You can change this if it does not say this already)
You should also do this for the "Secondary IDE channel" too..
You may be prompted to restart - if so, do it!
DMA is now selected :)
Hope this helps?

chubbito Jan 17, 2002, 08:59 PM alright, I checked that out, the DMA was enabled for both devices on my primary IDE (hard drive) , and on the secondary, the first device had it enabled, while the other was in PIO.. so I changed it to the DMA if available setting and restarted. I hoped that would fix it, but it's still jerky... oh well.. thanks for all of the help anyways, its much appreciated.
