View Full Version : Strange Problem w/MGS2 DVD-R!

This is beyond me, so I'll throw it open to the vets on the forum!

Basically, I have just finished the "Snake" part of the game and have got up to the part where Raiden takes over.

Now, the big cut-scene in Raiden's intro, ie. the one that starts with someone asking if Snake remembers the tanker explosion two years ago, loads and runs fine, but with NO SOUND.

This is the strange part. The big cut-scene in Snake's intro (ie. the one where he bungee jumps from the bridge), also had the same problem when I played it, but the sound loaded SOMETIMES and not others! Sometimes it would be silent like Raiden's one, and sometimes it would play perfectly!

?

Here's the loading method I am using;

PAL PS2 (launch version)
Neo 2.2
OPS2M DEMO Disc #14 (with TOC 4.31Gb, MGS2 TOC=4.30Gb)
Dave Mirra double swap trick

Any replies are greatly appreciated!

sounds like its just a laser/reading dvdr problem m8.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply!

I 'm pretty sure it wasn't a TOC size problem, seeing as how the same thing happens when I use my original PAL GTA3 as the DVD source.

I was hoping that the problem wouldn't turn out to be the laser, but I might have to seriously consider it.

For what its worth, at the moment, I don't think that the laser is the issue here simply because a weak one wouldn't bypass the entire soundtrack associated with a movie file, it would probably play it on and off, and that is assuming that it gets through the movie at all! Also, I haven't experienced any problems with any other DVDs, although MGS2 is the first DVD-R backup I have tried on my PS2.

Hopefully someone will come up with a solution that doesn't involve my replacing the laser?

Could be that u burned the game too fast. Try watching the intro movie (without pressing start) to see if it skips too.

Thanks for the reply, Capt. Peo.

I don't think it has to do with the speed of the burn, because I watch the introductory movie all the time (I think it's one of the best I've seen in a while now), and it has never skipped or stopped or lost audio at any point.

Some more food for thought; it struck me that it might be that the game has trouble loading up movie sequences which are quite long, but realised this couldn't be the case seeing as how the long introduction movie and the even longer movie depicting Ocelot's betrayal have run without any sort of problem.

Do you think it's possible that the burning quality may have lapsed at a certain point in the disc (if that is possible at all)?

Any replies are greatly appreciated!

You might have Dolby Digital option selected as some cut scenes are 5.1 and the audio would only play via the optical out

Is it by any chance on a Verbatim DVDr?

HI,,

my mgs2 original game experiences this problem also..it's not a dvd-r..it's the real thing and there are certain times when at the end..where there's the long cutscenes...there was only pic...no music or speech.... I think it's a ( bug) in the game or my 1st version ps2's inability to read the game correctly....hope this helps..:))

it happens on my original also...I have no sound all the way from the last movie , almost to the ending credits..so it's probably not the burn....something with the original...maybe with the sound setup?..

Any scratches in any of those you are trying to play?

had similar problem with my dolby surround setup when I was getting started, if you don't have surround and dolby 5.1 is selected from options at start sometimes the background is muted through cut-scenes

otherwise I'd say it's the toc cause sound files are sometimes on the outside part of dvsd

Wow ... I'm really surprised to see this thread come up again, I thought it died a while back.

Anyway, thanks to all of you who suggested ways of fixing the problem. In the end, it turned out that the problem wasn't with the disc, or the PS2, but with the Dolby 5.1 option which was turned on. I started the game again from the beginning, and all of the cutscenes work perfectly, and I've been playing Raiden's adventure for about an hour or so now.

Thanks again to all those who bothered to reply!

P.S. The funny thing about the whole thing is that I DO have a 5.1 setup, but it still doesn't work!

I have the dvd-r of this and have the same thing. skipping at the intro and such. How do you turn on the 5.1 or what do I need to do?

I am using the dmc demo as the boot disk. any ideas. no it is not on apple, but princo? all the others on these work flawlessly. So I am assuming that it is either a crappy burn or I need to turn on the 5.1 or turn it off, not really clear on this.

The only other proble that I could come up with is that it looks like the dvd-r is 'chipped' around the edges, though it is not in the burn part, just on the edges.

Thanks
