Does anyone know how to copy a .avi file i downloaded from the net to DVD, ie .avi to .mpg etc or anything Smartripper will recognise

Are you wanting this to play on a stand alone??? If not just burn it as you would any data compilation..

If you want it to work on a standalone, then you are going to need to convert it to MPEG1/2 with something like TMPGEnc or CCE, then author it and burn.

Smart ripper will only recognise DVDs.

I cant enter it into TMPGEnc as i get the error message 'thefastandthefurious.avi cannot open or unsupported.'
I can play it on an avi player on my pc though but i wanted to burn it to dvd to play on my player

Try installing the codec for the version of divX used.. For instance if it uses 311alpha then install that, instead of just say using DivX 5.

To my knowledge you can't get Tmpeg to open a divx file. Am I wrong? I think VirtualDub will, in which case you can use Virtual Dub to convert it to a REAL Avi file, and use another program to make that into an Mpeg2.

TMPGEnc will open up a DivX AVI file just fine.. Just noticed that it doesn't seem to like opening up XVideo AVI files though... You can always use AVI synth to frame serve anyway.
