Everitt Mar 20, 2002, 04:58 AM hello
my Mitsubishi Diamond Data 50X (50CM) cd-rom seems to never read above 28x
I tried nero cd speed checker and I was alarmed at the results
is there anyway I can increase the speed of my cd-rom drive
my liteon 24x10x40 reads faster than this
I was reading a data CD at no more than 28x
carpy Mar 20, 2002, 04:59 AM have you updated drivers?

umm this may sound dumb but how do I do that?
celtic_druid Mar 20, 2002, 06:36 AM You don't. IDE drives don't need drivers.. Perhaps he meant firmware.. Although perhaps that is all that the drive is capable of, if so there is nothing you can do to speed it up, all you can do is get a new drive.
Keymaster Mar 20, 2002, 11:21 AM Your Mitsubishi 50X cd-rom should read data faster than your liteon 24x10x40. The math is quite simple, 50x is faster than 40x. Both numbers represent CAV reading (although the Misubishi may be CAV/CLV or P-CAV) so the Mistsubishi starts faster and ends faster (certainly it is faster at some point or it would be false advertising to call it 50x). CD drive makers can get away with deception, but not outright lying. ;)
Make sure DMA is enabled for the drive. The drive is not fast at DAE and 8x is consisered typical by the manufacturer, but for data CDs a full CD should reach the 50x max. What controller and setting is the drive? Try it as master on the secondary controller if possible.

It is master as it used to be my only drive
How do I enable DMA
BTW thanks for your help keymaster... you seem to be able to help alot of people
booboy2 Mar 21, 2002, 08:36 AM To check that DMA is enabled
right click on my computer
select properties
select device manager
click on cd rom
double click on the drive in question
click on settings
put a tick in the enable dma box
I think you may have to restart your computer after changing these settings, it will tell you if you do. Then go through it again and after re booting the tick should be there.
celtic_druid Mar 21, 2002, 08:39 AM For XP DMA is listed under the IDE controller and not under individual drives.
Everitt Mar 21, 2002, 08:40 PM umm i can't find it... hmmm
i can install hardware and build computers but i can't screw with settings in windows LOL!
Keymaster Mar 21, 2002, 09:10 PM In Control Panel->Systems->Hardware->Device Manager, select the IDE Controller and set DMA if available fro the CD-ROM.
Everitt Mar 21, 2002, 10:21 PM apparently it was already enabled
hmm mayeb i should just buy antoher cd-rom?
I would like to fix this one tough as I am tight for money at the moment
Keymaster Mar 21, 2002, 11:39 PM You could try to update the firmware. Get the update from here: http://www.mitsubishi-electric.com.au/downloads/cd-rom/cdrom-firm.htm. You could also try the drive as master on the secondary controller.
Everitt Mar 21, 2002, 11:40 PM ugghhh the problems just keep coming
how do you make a boot disk in XP?
BTW thanks Keymaster and others for your help so far!!
celtic_druid Mar 22, 2002, 02:02 AM Try: http://www.bootdisk.com
Everitt Mar 22, 2002, 04:00 AM thanks very much celtic_druid
