Let's boycott audio cd-r's. Why? because the RIAA gets a cut of the profits from the sale of audio cd-r's.

burnalex Mar 20, 2002, 03:00 PM Let's boycott audio cd-r's. Why? because the RIAA gets a cut of the profits from the sale of audio cd-r's. Darkman Mar 20, 2002, 07:19 PM Err.... thanks for that. Did you know that's the whole point to audio CDRs?? stand-alone duplicators are built to only accept audio CDRs so that a portion of the purchase price of the blanks can go back to the music iundustry as 'compensation' for loss of copyright payments that would have been made from the sale of the CD being duplicated. This is no secret, infact it's been a central discussion on these forums since Joseph played half-back for Nazareth. If you burn audio discs on a PC burner there is no point paying extra for the audio CDRs as burners don't check for the audio CDR data located on the lead in track of the disc. Keymaster Mar 20, 2002, 07:40 PM LOL... @ Joseph played half-back for Nazareth :D A better boycott would be Original Audio CDs. Hoss Mar 20, 2002, 07:40 PM Well put ole m8...and yes unfortunetly some people (perhaps you are one) don't realize these are only neccesary for Duplicators and not PC type CDRW's If you have bought these in the past...well now ya know not to buy them in the future ;);) http://www.cdrom-guide.com/ubb/4MoDeRaToRs/SiGnAtUrE_ImAgEs/hoss1.gif Darkman Mar 20, 2002, 09:47 PM Hi Oz, good to hear from you. There is an upside to this CDR tax - it means that Canada have effectively legalised pirating of audio CDs. You can't tax something & then prosecute someone for using the taxed item in the manner that it is specifically being taxed for. Record companies will no longer be the manufacturers of pressed CDs, they will release a number of master copies that the back yard boys will buy to use in their production of Bryan Adam's greatest hits. The tax on the blanks goes back to the record companies and the (now legitimate) pirate handles the distribution and sales. Capitalism at work!. Hmm that opens up a whole new line of income - sales tax on cocaine, perhaps an excise on drive by shootings, instead of taking suspected criminals to the court for a lengthy and expensive trial the police can just send out invoices for taxes due. Keymaster Mar 20, 2002, 10:42 PM Does an MP3 CD player get taxed, it can't record? You've already paid the tax on the CD-RW drive. $100 Canadian to bring MP3 players in line with Audiocassettes? Audio cassette players can be purchased for $10. They've got a lot of calculating to do to make this one fly. Does this tax also apply to minidisc players, and how much will VHS tapes costs. It wouldn't be so bad if Joni Mitchel gets richer, but it will will just represent a windfall for the fat-cat tone deaf recording company executives, until Joni renegotiates a new contract at least. I agree with Darkman that there should be an upside but taxes flow downhill (like other undesirable stuff). The tax on Audio CDs doesn't exempt anyone from maaking illegal copies of CDs on standalone or any othe CD burners. JAMAL Mar 21, 2002, 02:10 PM WTF, glad i don't live in Canada (i'm not glad that i live in the UK either LOL) but not all cdr's are used for Illegal burning so what if you wanted to back up your HD or make your own photo cd or similar? you have to pay an extra $1 or so, that stinks big time! JAM Beety Mar 22, 2002, 04:33 AM Some makes of standalone audio duplicators can be chipped to not check whether you are using Audio CD-Rs - so you can use bog standard cheapies in them ;) |
