I've subscribed to PCW & PC Pro for a few years now. While I really enjoy PCW, I'm getting a little bored of PC Pro. I find it has too much that relates to businesses (network stuff reviews, office (word, spreadsheets, database) help, etc (OK, so that is what it's aimed at! - not a criticism, just not my preference), and I wondered what other mags people preferred, for home use, reviews, articles, etc.

I agree with you that PCW is pretty good. While PC Pro is a bore to me. (JMO)

Computer Buyer I like for reviews of all the latest hardware and MicroMart for prices, trade info etc. Computeractive is also a great mag IMHO not just for newbies but even for seasoned pros, as it comes out every 2 weeks the trade news is always a lot fresher than the monthly mags.

An even better and cheaper way is to go to these mag's websites and tune into their free online versions IMO. :D

Before I got the internet I used to buy Computer Shopper so I could do price checks (I can't believe that was the way things used to be!). It was ok but some of the technical stuff was over my head. I also got PC Gamer which I thought was the best gaming magazine and usually came with 2 cover cds. Again I started using the internet more. Can't beat having a hard copy to sit down and flick through, just a pity a lot of the content is out of date.

I know what you mean about PC Pro, I still buy it tho, probably out of habit. PCW is still good. Have a look at PC Advisor, that's another one I buy regularly and enjoy.

PC Advisor is good. My favourite is PC Format. Try it out m8.

Is PC Adviser aimed at newbies? I just want something that covers everything, like PCW, like hardware & software reviews, news, etc but not games (I prefer Edge for games, and don't really play PC games).

I haven't read Computer Shopper for ages, so I might give it a try again. Last time I read it it had over 600 pages, but two thirds of that was ads.....! The thing that puts me off CS is on the web site they say they have a guide on how to shop.....! Duh...!

PC Answers is one of the best IMO.

Thought I'd bump this one back up to see if there's any more opinions.....

I've just cancelled my PC Pro subscription....far too dull and work related. I also took up an offer of 3 issues of PC Buyer for £1......what a load of crap! Talk about hand holding....! It's clearly aimed at complete beginners and is written in 'plain English'......!

I've had a browse through a few in Smiths.....most seem to be aimed at beginners or total retards. The rest are typical Future Pubs fayre; a decent read, but 5 quid for what amounts to a very glossy leaflet with a cover cd.

PCW is by far my fave. There must be another that's of a similar standard (or a bit more techy)......!

I'm not interested in games from a PC mag, btw.....I get the Edge for that.

Just started reading PC Advisor too Matt, V good. PC Answers is not bad either. Or my fave is to stand in my local WH Smith's for 1/2 hour reading them for free!

imho
got the `t shirt for this one.
LEAVE `EM ON THE SHELF (after you`ve had a good look in store)

1 mag for 10 months = say £30 = 1 stick 128 ram
3 mags for 10 mths. = say £90 = 1 nice 40 gig hdd.
(double those prices for pc format dvd)
all info available on the net quicker.
and best of all-----no sh**e on computer off silly cover discs.
