Hi
Just bought a phillips cd re writer x16 speed, got a x24 speed cdrom, when i make copies they are only being copied at about x5 speed. My PC is Pentium 2 with plenty free memory.
If i bought a new x52 speed cdrom would this solve the problem am make copies faster or closer to x16 speed
Please help

What are you copying audio, data, games, VCDs? All 24x speed CD-ROMs are not the same particularly when it comes to audio (DAE). You could have a 52x CD-ROM that can only support DAE at 8x. Check www.cdspeed2000.com for specs on your CD-ROM. Check the data and the DAE test results. You can also use these results to find a suitable faster CD-ROM.
Many fast CD-ROM/DVD-ROMs are capable of 16x audio burns. You can also download the test to run on your own system. You may find it is actually faster to extract an image to your hard drive with the CD-RW and burn from there.
BTW, make sure DMA is enabled for both drives in Device Manager.

direct memory access. 's best to alway have this turned on, unless it causes more problems.
also, ensure you always have up to date writer software, and all drivers are up to date. motherboard/ide drivers in particular.
and just cos it's a 24x cdrom doesn't mean it'll read at 24x. you'll find that 24x is the maximum speed it *might* read at, during an interplanetary alignment, on the equator, at the end of an 80min cd. 5x seems more likely for your reader.

depends on the quality of the drive, tbh.
best to check out anandtech and the like, tomshardware and stuff. see what drives they've benchmarked.

Read Keymasters post carefully as he told you just because it's 52x does not mean it's fast at DAE go to the site he linked, CD Speed and look at the tables.

Or just go buy a LiteOn LTD-163 DVD drive and be done with it.
