83bj60 Mar 24, 2002, 01:14 AM Hello Folks,
My old Veritas Backup Exec won't recognize my new LiteON burner :(
Anyone know what compatible backup software (incremental, differential, full) there is out there that works with this burner?
TIA!
ez_tiger Mar 24, 2002, 05:02 AM give NTI CD Maker 2000 a go - they tend to update their burner database the most often.

Indeed they do. I can confirm that if you install the latest version (V5.1.9) and then the new support database file it will work with your LiteOn 40X, in fact IIRC I'm sure I saw details for the 48X burners in the log for the LiteOn & the Plex! (And they're not even released yet!)
This software rocks and I've never had a single problem with it. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
P.S.
BackupNow! their back-up software may be more of what you are looking for. Check it out at www.ntius.com/
83bj60 Mar 24, 2002, 07:23 AM I've indeed tried NTI Bakup Now and it works :)
Only problem is, it takes a bit over 8 minutes to backup 430MB - it seems it writes in 2MB increments, then switches to the HD, then writes again. The drive light goes on and off. That makes the backup process very slow (about 6X on a 12X CD-RW, same on a CD-R at full speed!)
Any ideas why? I'm going to try Backup Plus now...
83bj60 Mar 24, 2002, 11:28 AM Backup Plus is not bad, although I prefer NTI's layout and design much better, much more professional.
Backup Plus is however much faster, but it requires you to have a packet writing software installed as it relies on formatting the disk prior to writing(with InCD, you're limited to CD-RWs) - 5.5 minutes for 448MB (about 9-10X).
You do have to freshly format a disk for it to work OK (erasing the disk in Explorer won't do and will slow down the process considerably).
I may get back to NTI or try other software packages. We'll see, I'll keep you posted.

You should 83bj60 their stuff rocks! Why? Because it does exactly what it say's on the box. EZCD? Yeah, right.
They update it on a regular basis so you never need to worry about buying a new drive for support. I left EZCD a long time ago, distanced myself from Nero 5.5 because of a number of bugs (though I still rate Nero, V5.5.7.8 is much better!) and went to NTI thru recs on other boards. Some complain "It looks too simple!" So what?!?!?! The prog is rock solid reliable and delivers *EVERY* time.
Ain't that what all software should be I ask?
Hoss Mar 24, 2002, 10:06 PM Hey m8 have not tried NTI's yet but I do like Dantz Retrospect a lot. Have a look to see if supprots the 40x

83bj60 Mar 24, 2002, 11:16 PM Hoss, I had a look but the drive is "unqualified" for use with Retrospect, so I just passed it by.
OTOH, I have found a work around for using my trusted Veritas Backup Exec: I write the backup to a file on a formatted CD-RW and it works just as well, except that it will not span media. Besides that, it packet writes fast on a formatted CD-RW (I clocked my backup at around 10X on a high-speed CD-RW).
Since I already had a backup job system well figured out with Veritas Backup Exec I'll keep using it for now. It's the least painful migration.
Too bad I cannot read the old backups written with the Plextor and too bad the Lite-ON does not work fast at all with CD-Rs in DirectCD (spins up and down with stop-and-go writing - I wonder why?) even though it works fine with CD-RWs. Maybe the next firmware wil fix this issue...
