i have what i believe to be a version 4 ps2. i think its a version 4 because it has 8 screws on the bottom and only 2 screw slots in the expansion bay. i got this ps2 from a guy that removed the sticker to put on his broken ps2 so he could return it. so with out the sticker i don't have the serial number or date code. this is why i am going by the 8 screws on the bottom.

i ordered a usb mod and installed the link wire. i used the version 4 diagrams. i put it back together and it won't load my back ups. it won't load my scratched gameshark v1.0 either. my v3 with neo2.2 does load the gameshark v1.0. i tested originals on this usb modded ps2 and they play fine. i tried both the top and bottom usb port as well. i even de-soldered and reconnected the link wire twice to make sure i had a good connection.
i tried doing the EA boot method and when i let go of reset the tray doesn't open. i have to press eject.

does anyone know what i am doing wrong? what should i look for?

You are correct, there is no EA method with the USB mod. You need to put EA patches on EA games
