i've just put a toshiba sd-m1212 into my pc but it can't read dvdrs, it doesn't even show them in explorer, it just says no disk inserted???
i does read dvds, and everything else, just not dvdrs. why?
it was from a dell machine so i don't know if that will make any difference, also i've checked the dvdr and it works fine in other machines.

You think that's bad ?
I have a Pioneer A03 DVD burner and it burns DVDs perfectly.
Wont play any of the buggers though !

I have a Toshiba SD-M1002 (very first gen of DVD-ROM - i.e. 1X; cost US$500 incl. decoder board in 1997).
Interestingly, while it doesn't read CD-R media, it reads DVD-R media.
This surprised me since it is so old and doesn't read CD-Rs.
The only thing is that it is slow at reading the DVD-R discs; maybe I'll try upgrading the firmware.
I have a 12X DVD ROM now anyway, so nothing to lose.
