what 's the difference between general purpose and authoring dvdr?

The $$$ unless you have an authoring drive. The pioneer A03/103/A04/104 are general purpose drives, I am not even sure if they can use authoring media, but if they can it would just be a waste.

With an Authoring drive/media, you can do straight copies, or burn original copyrighted material.
