Strange thing happend lately....

I´m running on XP, and for the last few days, when shutting down XP, this myseterious screen shows up telling me there is insufficient virtual memory. What the heck??? I did not install anything lately, and i have not been messing around with my settings eighter.

What might cause this, and how to solve it?

You may be running out of disk space, and don't have enough space for the Page file. This could be caused by temporary internet files, not emptying the recycle bin, or the System Restore function.

I've had this happen a couple times, so I just increased the size of my Page file 100 MB's I'm not sure why it does this at shutdown, but I did check a couple times when multi-tasking and it was right my Page file was getting a little low.

Enlarge the page file... thanx Hoss!
I could have tought of that... however i do not understand how this is caused. I delete my temporary files about every 2 weeks, so i don't think that is causing it.
Disk space can not be the problem, i have at least 20 Gb free.

Anyway, i'll enlarge the page file. That should solve the problem for now.

DOn't know only thing I can figure is XP saves all your settings etc on exit, so it must dump what's in RAM to look at it, if there'e not enough space....

Hoss....

about enlarging the page file: i checked the size and found it was 384 MB, figured to enlarge it to 500MB, but the problem remains. Tried to let XP manage the size of the page file then, but it still reports insufficient virtual memory. I can't imagine XP needing over 500 MB of virtual memory... what is going on here?

Open the .wdl file with notepad in the c:/windows/logfiles/watchdog/ folder. You may be having a problem with your video card.

Right..... but there is no such file in no such folder....

all the wdl files i can find are these:

ICWDL in folder c:\i386
WDL.TR_ in folder c:\i386
ICWDL in folder c:\windows\i386
WDL.TR_ in folder c:\windows\i386
wdl.trm in folder c:\windows\system32

and a few more in program files. There is NO file with .wdl as an extension. By the way... exacly WHAT sould this file tell me?

Try to increase your Initial size page file to 576MB and your Maximum size page file to 1152MB. This is my default settings and never had that insufficient problem.

I do use Norton Internet Security 2002 indeed, with antivirus and firewall. But this never caused any trouble, untill some 3 weeks ago... if this was the problem, it should have occured before shouldn't it?
Besides, i do not want to give up my firewall and antivirus, because i regularly connect to the university. University computers are not really known to be safe... 95% of hackers attacks and virusus are prooven to come from there..

Anyway.... I even increased the ammount of virutal memory ro 576 minimum and 1152 maximum like fastZ8 supposed, but still no result.

....insufficient virtual memory.... can anybody help me out here??

mate,
mine started doing that, bout 3 weeks ago too.
best thing to do, it to disable the firewall when u are not online, eg when shutting down, this error will then not occur,

just only use fire wall whilst on the net,

apparently it is something to do wiff an update, do u update Xp and ur Norton works?

hope this helps

If nothing else works for you, the best thing to do is reformat and reinstall Windows.

Eeehhm....

someone advised me to make a registery speedpatch containing the following:

REGEDIT 4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000001

i'm quite kind of concerned about the registery, because it has been years since i was messingwith the registery... i did not exactly keep up with regeistery-stuff lately....

Is this patch a good idea???

if you are running a norton internet security product, this came off their page This issue was caused by a recent Live Update.

----
We are investigating why this is happening. Currently, there are a few different options to work around the problem. You can disable Norton Internet Security before shutting down or restarting Windows. Or you can uninstall and reinstall Internet Security and select to not download the current program updates. I do apologize about the situation, we will resolve the issues as soon as possible. If we can be of further assistance in regards to Norton Internet Security, please let us know. Thanx Evolver!
I´ve been searching thier site, but i did not find this...

Update on the problem:

I performed the speedpatch, and untill yesterday, it seemed to actually work... After my girlfriend played a pinball game however, the message was back! What the ....?!
appearently not all the blame is to Norton...
