Well, if you get one used from places like funcoland (or any used video games store) you could always check the unit to make sure it 's one that will play back-ups. You just need to check the sticker on the bottom of the unit.

Don't all DC's play backups? I thought if you had one that didn't play older backups you would have to make it data\data selfboot instead of audio\data selfboot. All you have to do is take an older game, copy the files, make iso out of them with mkisofs, use bin2boot on them then burn with discjuggler and then its data\data selfboot and works on all DC's.

Well, you need one made before sep. 2000, You can look on ebay, and ask the seller if it is made before then. Or, if you find a good one you can put a mod chip in it.

I bought a Dreamcast on eBay that the guy claimed was new, but actually is used. I wanted a new one. If you want I will sell it to you for $90 including shipping. It does play backups and does work. I can only accept PayPal to a confirmed address. Email me if interested.

OR you could BUY a new DC for 50 bucks, and do what that other guy said. The data/data mode. It works
