timoros Jan 18, 2002, 07:40 PM I keep reading posts about the liteon, and I must say I wasn't very keen on this burner when I first read about it, mainly because of its very low price.
In England, I can find a Liteon24x priced around 70-80 pounds, while the "popular" brands sell their product at at least 30 pounds up.
So, is it ONLY the name that makes it a cheap burner in price, or there are other things as well?
I'm a bit tight of money right now, and if I can save 30 pounds or something close to that I'd be more than happy.
However, does it really work fine and can cope with all the usual stuff one would want it to work? How about Clone CD and Nero, can it take advantage of all their capabilities?
Thank you for your replies and sorry if its a boring post!
mrmojo Jan 18, 2002, 08:15 PM I have the liteon 24x and i personally think its an excellent piece of kit.
It works fine with clonecd and nero
Nero i use solely for mp3's and clonecd for games.
I also use Easy cd 5 occasionally and have no problems there.
I have recommended this drive to a friend he bought one and he is a very happy chappy.
Thumbs up on this burner.
Good points.
Low Cost
Clone cd compatible
Nero compatible
Writes Raw ( no worries about protected games )
Fast
Quiet
Bad Points
Can't think of any.
I compared The Plextor 24x with the Liteon 24x
via CDR info webpage and they both had there good points and there bad points.
But for 70 notes for a 24x writer can't be bad.
I actually paid £109 for mine and that was money well spent.
timoros Jan 18, 2002, 09:09 PM cheers mate, I know, for 70 quid it simply can not be bad.
I read on the cdr info page that the reading times using clone cd are very bad, how bad would you say they are?
I have a yamaha 16x now, it should be better than that, isn't it?
Lazza Jan 19, 2002, 12:08 PM I too use the LiteOn 24X and as mrmojo said it's the biz!
LiteOn make CDRW's for many companies and they just re-badge them. The Plextor drive is made by LiteOn, it's just better quality plastic with a fan on the back. Mirror drives are re-badged LiteOn's etc, etc.
I thought that I would never use anything other than a Plextor drive but I am so glad that I got over brand loyalty. You can buy them for £70 from http://www.ebuyer.com/ and IMHO you can't go wrong. I use mine every single day for a minimum of 30-40 discs and it never lets me down, I record on 8X media at 24X after the latest firmware upgrade (5S54) and am a very happy user.
Why waste your money on another drive I ask. :D
sirdrinkalot Jan 19, 2002, 02:26 PM I hear that they are quite good, i was put off by the low price such as yourself. However i have taken the plunge and have gone for a 32x liteon so we will see what that is like when i get it.
bayag Jan 19, 2002, 06:31 PM The 32x burner is only about 20 secs faster than the 24x.
I am using Liteon and it is very good, the only thing it cant properly write are cdg files :(
timoros Jan 19, 2002, 07:04 PM whats a cdg file??
I'll be using it to copy audio and games, how well does it cope with Playstation (mixed mode) games??
matt88 Jan 20, 2002, 10:59 PM Ya I also wanna know if this writer can do Playstation games, and also svcd movies. Anyone have any info on that?
OC-Freak Jan 21, 2002, 02:14 AM Well here is my comment on the drive, I've used several different drives now (Do not ask me why, but I was also choosen as a mod for a lite-on forum at another board :p).
Positive:
No fan=no noise, It don't get hot anyway.
VERY good media compatibility(especially with the newest firmware version).
Makes backups of all protected PC games (except CD-Cops protected games which no writers could successfully defeat in ALL cases).
CD-TEXT compatible
Makes backups of most console games(playstation.....)
Fast cloneCD reader(CD-R Info tested with an old firmware version).
Not that expensive
Probably some things that I forgot
Negative:
Do not support READING some types of protected audio discs(It do write them properly though)
CD-RW disc reading is locked to 16X
Maybe I forgot somthing to:round:
BigStan Jan 21, 2002, 09:35 AM I have only and its the dogs bollo*ks!
No coasters yet, any media, most goes at 24x no problem. No problems that havent been able to be sorted. Does SD2 games, cheap, what more do you want from a cd burner? :)
scarecrowdr Jan 21, 2002, 01:06 PM What Can I Say What No One has said--------BUY IT........Worth Every Penny. GO ON!!! BUY IT NOW.
Have a Good 2002, Happy Copying. (when you have bought the Lite-On 24x10x40, you'll never look back.)
timoros Jan 21, 2002, 10:08 PM Thank you all guys for the replies!!
I placed the order on Sunday, I'll probably get it by thursday!! (tight c*nt, didn't wanna pay an extra 10pounds for next day!) :)
From what I've read here and the reviews as well, it will be my favorite burner so far! :D :D :D
speckulator Jan 22, 2002, 11:30 PM timoros, you won't be sorry Bud, it worried me that I had never heard of it and was cheap too, but after taking the advice of many here I ordered it. I couldn't be happier. They are much cheaper now but that is the way it goes. I prolly would have spent more than that on games and cd's for the kids anyway. Mine works great on any media I stuff in it and I am still using the first firmware. It wasn't broke so I didn't fix it.

timoros Jan 23, 2002, 02:01 AM thanx speculator, I've already placed the order and I should have it with me by thursday! I read that most people are happy with it and so I bought it, I guess it will not dissapoint me! :round: :round: :round:

angel12 Jan 24, 2002, 09:23 AM Just a quick note IMOH I have installed a lieton 24 speed writer only a few days ago and I was that impressed with it I went and bought the company! LOL
no seriously I went and bought 2 more and now all my writers are 24 speed I have burnt in excess of 200+ discs and no coasters and am acheiving perfect copies every time (all are copies are from originals I might add)
but I am definalty a fan have in the past had only Plextor and after reading about the fantastic reviews on this forum I bought a 16 speed liteon never looked back.. so had no hesitation in getting the 24 speed
and just to add good measure I am now a memeber of the Lieton fan club cause ive just got the Lieton 16 speed DVDrom.
what do I think BUY BUY BUY as said many times above u WONT be disapointed. one happy Bunny :)
ROCKN SS Jan 24, 2002, 01:41 PM I just put a liteon 24X burner in my girlfriends computer and I can not get Adaptec EZCD 5.0 to work with it. It says that there are no recognizable burners. Any suggestions?
It works fine with Nero.
jointzjunkie Jan 24, 2002, 03:21 PM You guys are a great help in buying something. Last year this time, I was searching for my very first burner...Plextor's 8x4x32a...this year it's time to step up with the big dogs.
I have an order placed for this drive and if it's all that you guys and others say it is, I'm going to be VERY HAPPY!!
Thanks!

KennyC Jan 24, 2002, 04:22 PM Hi,
The LiteOn's 24102b 24x10x40x and 32123s 32x12x40x are one of the few CD-RW that can backup the latest PC-CD SafeDisc v2.51.021 copy protection using CloneCD v3.3.4.1. CD-RW's like Phillips, Acer (I think) and Plextor 24x aren't now able to backup the latest SafeDisc
I have the 24x at work and 32x at home and can't fault them at all, just waiting for some CD software companies to update versions to recognise the 32x like DirectCD and CDRWin v4.0a.
Cheerz :) :D ;)

hi there
you'll need to update easy cd 5.0 with the update 5.2
go to the roxio site and get the update
It works fine with mine.
You'll have to register with roxio but that ain't no big deal.

Hi timoros
You'll most probably have your writer by now and will burning away merrily.
But the answer to your question .
Read speeds in clone cd i found have been very good.
SD2 if you have the fast error settings on 3 retrys it can take for ages but i have them the default settings which is 0 i think and i have had no problems back up safedisc 2.
The longest time i've had doing a pc game is 45mins to read the image and this was a vob protection which was cdcheck or something like that , but as i said before everything i've tried to copy i have.
Once again Excellent drive
Happy Burning

timoros Jan 26, 2002, 02:14 AM Hello all, I'm back with news about my new beauty!!!
First of all, what I got was the drive, 1 CDR, 1 CDRW, an audio cable and also a CD with some programms, which I won't use since I already have nero anyway!
Right.. so.... I installed the drive with no difficulty whatsoever.
I placed it on my second IDE cable as Secondary Master.
Primary master is my HDD and slave the DVD.
The drive was recognised immediately, and I used a variety of disks to check how it will respond.
First of all, my previous burner, the Yamaha 2100e (16x) would only write at 16x a 0,5% of the times I was trying to burn at 16x. It would give me an error and the burn (or the simulation) would fail.
The Liteon managed to burn at 24x for 19/19 times!! EXCELLENT!! Furthermore, I had no problems with buffer underuns, I had the BURN proof (actually Smart Burn) on but it needn't take action as the buffer was at 98% at all times, even though I had mp3 playback *****AN****** 2GB worth of movie transfers between our dorm LAN. (incoming data to my HDD).
I tested with CloneCD and Nero. Both worked great and I am really, REALLY happy about my purchase, the final price I paid was 77GBP (70 and 7 was for delivery).
I haven't had the time to test with PS2 disks, but I will do that as soon as I get my hands on some... I have 3 games and they are all DVD Roms, so no luck.
No testing with Safedisk 2 as well, because I was busy copying some other games and audio disks.
I sold my Yamaha 16x to my brother for 60 pounds (before I even decide which burner to get) and I feel bad.. I think I'm going to buy him a Liteon for his birthday (10 Feb) to make him happy!!
24x RULEZZZ!!!
The read speed is really amazing as well... The Yammy took a while for the laser to pick up data, and it was so slowwwwwwwwwww and noissssssssssssssssssy. This beauty here is FAST and SILENT. WHAT MORE CAN I ASK?????
PS: of course I removed the small www.liteon.com sticker that the drive had... I find it ridiculous to just have a WWW. thing instead of the name, so, away it went!! It still has a 24x10x40x logo painted on the plastic!
I'm a very VERY satisfied customer till now.....
I only hope I won't have any problem with it, because from what I've heard their support SUX.....
Lazza Jan 26, 2002, 12:57 PM All us Litey users out there just knew you would be happy with it m8!
I bought another so I could write to two at a time today! :D
It just makes so much sense.:D :D :D
Mind you, I would upgrade the firmware to "5S54" if I was you m8. I found after doing so that it will write to any old media then.
timoros Jan 26, 2002, 02:10 PM LAzza, how do I find out what firmware my burner is?
I've also heard that 5s54 doesn't cope well with SD2..
Lazza Jan 26, 2002, 02:27 PM Originally posted by timoros

When your PC boots up m8 and finds all your H/W it will list your HD and CD drives and show the firmware number.
Or if you go into "Device manager" click on your LiteOn, then select the settings tab you will see on the top right the heading "Firmware version" giving you just that.
As regards SD2 copying, I've only really done a few but from others I understand that it does take slightly longer with this firmware but is more reliable. If and when you do upgrade it m8, remember to disable DMA first and re-enable it after the upgrade or it can cause some serious damage to your drive.
Hope this helps. :)
quick Jan 26, 2002, 04:14 PM funnlie enough i also have this writer an i think its good for the price and what product your finished with =)
speckulator Jan 28, 2002, 12:03 AM Like Lazza said, never doubted it for a min. I like you just stuffed it in and off I went. I am still using the 01 firmware with no problem at all.

OC-Freak Jan 28, 2002, 01:19 AM Firmware 5S54 is the best firmware to use. No problems with Safedisc 2 and also the new SD 2.51.x version:tup:

timoros Jan 28, 2002, 10:38 PM I've never had any problems related to audio becuase of the speed they were burnt at...
With the Liteon, I've copied more than 15 CDs of Audio to friends of mine and have no complains whatsoever!! :)
AcE_SS Jan 28, 2002, 11:47 PM I have to get a Liteon burner, im tired of my 4x sony burner. I hate SONY!!!!!!!!:furious: Which is better a Liteon 24x or an Hp 24x ???
<<AcE SS>>
jointzjunkie Jan 29, 2002, 12:28 AM There were a few people that told me that some audio cds burnt above 12x wouldn't play in their cd players (home, car, personal, comp). I wouldn't know since my burner "was" only 8X. That will be great, I burn almost 50 Audio cds a week! now it'll only take a day or two!!
Thanks guys!
(btw...I just ordered the Black LiteOn 16x DVD drive, hope it's going to be as good as my Black 24X!) :D

Dare I say it but my LiteOn DVD Ltd-163 has barely even seen a DVD in it!! :D
I bought it pure and simple as a reader for audio. The DAE on this drive is great. I don't find it quite so great as a reader for data compared with my old Sony CDU5211 52X CD-Rom (which is pure class for data IMHO), but there's only little difference so I now use the LiteOn for both and freed up a drive bay.
But for audio it's the biz!
komp Jan 29, 2002, 09:55 AM Hello!
I've got a question for those who use Liteon + Nero..
Why I cannot see "Test" and "Test and Burn" as active but only "Burn" in Nero (latest).
Is there any patches or options I have to change?
I mean, how to Test in Nero on Liteon..
angel12 Jan 29, 2002, 01:04 PM in reply to previous posts regariding burning Audio discs
I have burnt my auidos at 24 speed and done over 150 and not one has come back saying it jumps
However I used have this problem with the Plex and had to drop down the speed to 12
as mentioned before I am one happy bunny I also have the Liteon DVD drive and like others it hasnt seen a DVD and never will just use if for Audio Long Live Lieton !!

How to enable it in Nero?:furious:
celtic_druid Jan 29, 2002, 06:05 PM You may be able to run a test burn if you disable the buffer underrun protection first.
timoros Jan 29, 2002, 08:37 PM hello mate, I don't have the latest version of Nero, but the one I have shows all the options.. What firmware is your burner??
Guys, I'm thinking to buy the Liteon DVD for the DAE.. Is it fast enough to allow me to burn on the fly at 24x with its "brother", the Liteon burner?

Lazza Jan 30, 2002, 12:24 PM What I meant was Devil-Man that LiteOn make most of the guts of the Plextor drives. No, they are not exactly the same drives and that has been made clear by some of the SD 2.51 results flying around at the mo by people who have made perfect copies of MOH with the LiteOn 24X drive but Plextor owners have had more than a few problems.
I had my doubts about Plextor drives being made by LiteOn but I have spoken to several hardware importers who have confirmed it 100%. Maybe they are wrong, which I doubt, but I'm not taking my drives apart to prove it one way or another m8! :D :D :D

Not a problem yet. I do have a bud with a Toyota Tundra that needs some disks reinserted sometimes before it plays but it doesn't matter what burner it was burned in or what speed it was burned at they all do it sometimes. The only common link in the problem is this 2 yr old Tundra

timoros Jan 31, 2002, 12:09 AM I have a Sony CDX M700R for my car, and it can get picky about the cdrs I put inside, so there might be a media problem as well with your Toyota Tundra...
I'm sure you'll have no problems if you just change the media you're using into something more reliable, thats what I did and it plays like a beauty now!! :)
northernmonkey Jan 31, 2002, 08:23 AM I use a lite-on 24x only problem I've had is the cd tray opening on its own when I was tinkering about with my PC putting another HD in apparently its something to do with the via chipset on some mobo's (mine being Abit Kr7A), apart from that I cant fault it and will be getting another 1 very soon
timoros Feb 01, 2002, 11:19 PM the tray was opening on its own?? I've never heard this thing before.. Have you tried updating the firmware and flash your BIOS?

It's an Abit/LiteOn 24X problem but I think it can be sorted by a BIOS update IIRC.
johntin Feb 03, 2002, 07:24 AM just been out and bought this drive for myself £72. It is to replace the exellent 12101B that never let me down (any1 want 2 buy it?).

timoros Feb 04, 2002, 11:17 PM hello all!
I got my burner on the 26th, and until now I've burnt more than 400+ CDs, all of which work fine!
This drive is really an investment, and I'm certainly buying another one for my other computer any time soon (probably after getting the Liteon DVD as well!!)
The only problem I've noticed is that some times after its been burning for a while, say one hour straight or a bit more, when it tries to write the laser will not pick up and the led will only be red for less than a sec, than back to dark, then red etc... This happens during LeadIn in cloneCD
Sometimes this will last about a minute and then carry on with the actual burning process. But there are a few times that it has actually made my computer freeze, and it was NOT cool.. I'm used to Win2K being stable and don't bother saving my work often...
But I was doing that website update thing and it made lose around 45 mins of work.
Apart from that its a great burner already. Highly reccomended!
HartBreaker Feb 05, 2002, 03:56 PM I’ve been using one for several months. I haven’t had a single problem with it. I’ve recently upgraded the firmware (apparently, to make it even more compatible). It copied to every disk I’ve inserted without complaint. Unlike the Memorex 12Maxx and the Acer 1208A I had before it.
I’d definitely recommend one. :)
You can read all about it here:-

I'll be back as the original timoros in 6 days.... ;)

timoros Mar 09, 2002, 11:38 PM I had that problem with the tray ejecting like 3 weeks ago.....
I remember someone mentioned it in page 4 or something.....
No matter what I did, I couldn't fix it so I bought another one!
83bj60 Mar 10, 2002, 09:55 AM How many CDRs did you burn per hour straight? These drives don't like to burn constantly, I have that from LiteON's site. They say you should rest the burner between burns. Anyway, I read somewhere that the tray problem was fixed recently.
How was your experience with CD-RWs? I do most of my burning for backup purposes and haven't had very reliable results with high-speed CD-RWs (burning at 10X).
OC-Freak Mar 11, 2002, 06:07 AM I've been burning straight for 5hrs without any breaks with both my LTR-24102B's without any problems at all :D I wrote over 120 CD's at that 5 hrs. without any coasters at all.
Lazza Mar 11, 2002, 06:16 AM Aw, and I've only burnt about 60 discs today with my pair of Liteys.:(
But I have had quite a few coffee breaks OC. :D
BTW, just checked in at the CDFreaks board OC. Have you had any answers yet from anyone who has really flashed their 24X upto a 32X?
83bj60 Mar 11, 2002, 01:47 PM My Gawd, OC-Freak, you should call yourself CD-Freak!!!
How many CDs have you burnt on the Liteon 24X so far?! Are they good with CD-RWs?
Thraphosid Mar 12, 2002, 05:11 PM Five weeks after buying a Liteon 24102b I bought another for the second computer.
Both came with latest bios and I haven't produced a single coaster.
I waited a couple of months reading with interest the comments on this and other boards before I bought the first one and I have had no problems at all.
Whilst I am fairly new to this, it was the comments on this board that made me decide on the Liteon and I am delighted with it.
I'm not a major burner, the first one has only burnt around a 1000 (various audio, pc and games) I haven't managed to cook one (and believe me I've tried).
An excellent burner, available for around £70 and worth every penny.
Thraphosid.

the_oracle_uk May 20, 2002, 02:15 PM liteon 24x kicks *** and if its a newer version it can write at 32x or so I hear by simply changing the firmware

Lazza May 20, 2002, 07:39 PM DAE stands for "Digital Audio Extraction" JEDI, and the LiteOn Ltd-163 DVD drive is about the best audio/data reader on the market.

as long as the disc is not scratched - the error correction is not so good.
timoros May 24, 2002, 06:23 PM Oh my God, when I first created this thread I didn't know it will be so popular so many months later!!!
Anyways, up to now, I honestly must have burnt something close to 2000 disks, all with my second Liteon because the first one had the tray ejecting problem.
Anyone found any solution for it yet?...
Nice to see my thread surviving through all those pages of our forum!!!
Makes me feel special!! :) (i might as well start crying now!!) hahaaha!! :)
timoros May 24, 2002, 06:26 PM and out of the almost 2000 disks, I might have had 10 or 15 coasters... Which is quite an achievement!
I don't usually use CDRWs though so I can not really comment on that... sorry!
elperra May 24, 2002, 08:26 PM Wow! I think I gonna get a liteon, my brother just bought a Plex16x and you can get a liteon for half the price.
Bejita May 24, 2002, 08:52 PM I have Liteon 24x its almost 5 months old lately My PC hungs when I burn using winoncd. Do you guys experience that? Anyone knows how to fix it?

True enough - I have both the Lite-ON LTR-40125S and the LTD-163 and the DVD-ROM does indeed have poor error correction (lots of C2 errors revealed in CD Speed) compared to the burner and the old Toshiba Xm-6502B on my wife's computer. OTOH, it's a great drive to weed out marginal media.
a cast of thousands May 26, 2002, 02:58 PM I been looking to upgrade my Sony 140E (x8) - looks like the Liteon is the one for me ... one question though ... will it overburn on 90min media ?
thanks

timoros May 26, 2002, 06:51 PM from what I know, it can overburn on 90min media, yes..
For the problem with CDRwin, I don't use this so I can't really say....
Well, for its money its definitely a very good burner!!
celtic_druid May 27, 2002, 12:11 AM It supports overburning right upto 99mins.
