I'd go with the anthlon for blazing speeds, Pentium 4 for reliability

ATHLON XP is far better. They have extra top secret instructions built into the chip. And they cost less.

i would go for athlon 2100 if i am going to buy a new computer. better performance for less $$$. but if u are really going for athlon then get a bigger fan and a bigger heat sink.

just to go against the current flow:

p4 1.6a will overclock way past 2 GHz. Get an asus p4te motherboard.

Athlon XP PRO.:tup::tup:
Pentium 4 2.2GHz $484 (http://www.pricewatch.com/1/3/4421-1.htm)
PC Athlon XP 2100 $235. (http://www.pricewatch.com/1/3/4657-1.htm)
Why pay so much more, I wouldn't!!!

Ok, that's not fair. P4 1.6A can be overclocked to 2.4 GHz with stock
fan and sells for $133 the last time I checked at google gear.

How much can the AMD be overclocked to without buying an aquarium
from alaska to keep it cool?

motojeff, I'm talking about stock and not voiding the warranty. So that is fair. By the way I have my
XP1800 overclocked to XP2000 with out a fish tank.

Both Intel and AMD make chips that fulfill the needs of the average user.
I would get an Athlon, because it gives more bang for your buck.

Hey,

Intel Pentium 4

Reliability counts

Intel Pentiums are more reliable, AMD in the other hand.......

I prefer reliabilty than garbage the next day  *cough* AMD.

Just my 2 cents :D

AMD, been running them for years and never had a problem. If you want your cash to cover multi-million dollar, idiotic "blue men" marketing campaigns then buy the more expensive Pentium, if not buy AMD!

cbsnow31, I agree. My old AMD K6 200, from 98, overclocked to a whopping 233 MHz (!) :D, is still running just fine.
My Duron is one year old, it is a 700, but I overclocked it to 927 MHz the day I got it, and it have not missed a beat.
And it gets a hard beating too, I run the cancer project on it whenever the machine is powered on. CPU usage is always 100%.
Well, it sometimes drops to 98.....

:saywhat:WOW that's funny:laugh: I don't know how many reviews I've read on XP Pros:tup: and P4s:tdown:and that's never been mention as a problem!!!! But they do mention how much more a P4:tdown:will cost you. So I can say from what I've seen and read on the pro's that's never been a problem!!! Also lets not forgot who will have the first 64-bit chip AMD and Intel may have it a year later so what do they do with that extra money:suspic:, pay the stock holders?
I would say you can't go wrong with and XP Pro:tup:

Does anybody here read anandtech forums besides me?
It is pretty damn technical and the majority there feel the P4 1.6A
is the best deal out there right now. It's strange how that community
is the opposite of this thread... to each his own though.

Haven't got an Xp just a 1gig athlon. Never had any trouble with it apart from the known Soundblaster problem. The high temperature is sorted on the XP. I would go for the XP. Price wise it's a winner

All my pc's have Athlon XPs in them bacause they run much faster than the P4. They do however get VERY hot.
