Hi,
I run Windows 98 and I've just bought a portable, external CD-RW 8x/8x/24x that connects via the USB port to my PC. I've loaded it on my laptop no problems, but in the process of installing it on my PC, my BIOS got messed up. When I look at the USB under Device Manager in the System I get:
-AMD-756 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
-USB Root Hub
-Unknown Device.
I've tried to delete the device, the USB root hub, the USB controller, and reboot. I've tried the troubleshooting suggested by Microsoft such as "enable device" etc. Won't work. All that happens is the New hardware wizard comes up and says new device found and then sets it just as it was before, with unknown device. Meanwhile I can't get my CD-RW working and WIndows won't let me load the drivers for it. HOpe this makes sense. Please help!

First, try double-click on the "Unknown Device" to open its Properties window then update the driver to see if it lets you.

If not, try disconnecting the burner from the USB port then re-install the driver.
