The CloneCD site quotes firmware version 1.80 as being the best version for my drive, which is an Aopen 9624. I have located this driver but it is an unnofficial upgrade and not on the Aopen site. I currently have version 1.70 but I would like to upgrade to 1.80 as it is supposed to enable RAW-DAO 96 but I'm worried that I'll end up with an unusable drive. Has anyone out there upraded their firmware to 1.80 and is it ok?
Thanks in advance.

As long as it's not a hacked version of the firmware it will be the same "Official" file.
But here's a little tip for you....sometimes when searching for updates, whether it be Mobo, Software, CDRW whatever....you may not find it at their US site, but you will at their UK site or the Taiwan site. So run a search in Google for say Aopen support or Aopen firmware and go to the different ones that show up.
you will also find several reputable sites for firmware listed in here

A Firmware upgrade is something to take seriously, but don't scare yourself shitless about it. First a recommend a DOS only flash, not Windows type!
Use a good floppy not some old one that's been kicking around for a years. Do a FULL Format to make sure it has no bad spots.
Remove any disc from the CDRW drive, and make sure the PC is operating smoothly with no chance of a power outage durin the upgrade. Then Flash away.
