at the bottom it says how to install the spring for the ps version. what i'm asking is it hard to install the spring and do i have to do it.?

The spring is out in the open. With the lid up look at the back under the door. There should be a button thet depresses when the door closes. This is where the spring goes. All it does is trick the psx into thinking the door is shut when it is actually open. (So you can do the swap) Yes you do need it.
