eze Apr 13, 2002, 11:15 PM Ok, heres the deal. I have Medal of Honor Allied Assault and Return to Castle Wolfenstein and my computer is the bare minimum to be able to run them (500 MHz, 256MB RAM, and a 16 mb voodoo 3). my question is, would I be able to get better framerates and run them with a higher resolution if I got a GeForce 4 card? Or is my CPU power a important factor? Does CPU power just determine your load speed, or does it affect gameplay as well? Any reply is appreciated.
Thanks
Jaice Apr 14, 2002, 12:04 AM Basicly of you select a higher resolution, your frame rates will be worse. If you get a faster CPU and a better Graphics card, your gameplay and fps will be much better.
eze Apr 14, 2002, 12:53 AM Yes, I realize this, but I was wondering if I kept my 500mhz processor and got a geforce4, would I get better framerates, or is this dependant on my CPU?
gamehunter Apr 14, 2002, 10:22 AM Excellent question. I also would like to know the experts opinions on this. :)
celtic_druid Apr 14, 2002, 11:06 AM The higher the res the less difference the CPU makes.. However I would have to say that a 500MHz processor is just a little slow..
If you were say running a 1GHz and a 1.4Ghz CPU with the same video card then you would notice very little if any difference in frame rates at 1600x1200 where as at 640x480 you would. On the other hand if you compared a GF4MX and a GF4Ti at 1600x1200 on the same CPU would notice a major difference in frame rates.
king nero Apr 14, 2002, 11:25 AM but hey, a 500MHz cpu ain't that bad - if I were you, I'd go for that videocard.
I'm running a 1 GHz cpu, w/ a Geforce MX/MX400 (64 MB) nowadays.
Some time ago, when i still had my 450 MHz, i bought this videocard (i had a voodoo 1:-don't laugh- 4 MB), and it increased performance enormously, even w/ that 450 MHz cpu.
So, if it worked w/ a 450, it'll work for sure w/ your 500. and hey, even if you want to upgrade your cpu, or perhaps your whole pc, you don't lose tha videocard, remember, you can use that one again, so it's not like throwing your money away.
DIABLO Apr 14, 2002, 06:58 PM It would be a waste of money getting any thing over a GF4 MX unless your going to upgrade you CPU soon as your currant CPU would'nt keep up with a high-end GF4 so you would see little or no improvement in graphics with high-end cards based on the Ti 4400 or Ti 4600 chipsets over a MX based one. So i say get a GF4 MX card and you should see a good increase in speed.
thejikifreak Apr 15, 2002, 02:52 AM I had a P2 450, and I had a voodoo2 card. I was trying to play Quake 3, UT, and No One Lives Forever. Well, with the V2 card, I got crap for FPS on all three. Then I bought a Geforce 2 64MBMX450 or 400 whatever it was, and I got about 45FPS with Quake3(800X600all on HIGH tex, and everything ON), 35-40 on UT(800X600 high res), and like 35FPS with NOLF(800X600 all on high). Amazing thing, I was able to play Red Faction, and Soldier Of Fortune with everything ON at the highest quality with about 40FPS!!!
haytseroos Apr 21, 2002, 06:23 AM You will get bether framerates since the geforce 4 has a GPU that processes all the graphics. So your CPU can process the sound and AI.
