I use tons of different brands, no difference. Might be the laser of your 2 ps2 thats differently adjusted.

I tried memorex when i first started making ps2 back ups, because i burnt all my dreamcast back ups(100+) on memorex. But they didn't work well for my ps2 back ups, some of the games never loaded so i decided to buy IMATION cdr's and they've worked pretty well for me

can it be any brand of black cdr or does it have to be a specific brand?

the white top verbatim didn't work for me. I thought that this was very odd because verbatims were a great disk. Anyway, any other type or color verbatims work...it's only the one's with the plain white top.
