Just picked up a plextor 40/12/40. I am trying to update the firmware but it fails each time. Any ideas?

System specs:
Win 98se
1.4 Athlon
256 Corsair Pc2400
Epox 8k7a+ Raid
2 Wd 20gig 7200 Hd's (raid 0)
40/12/40 plex
106s 16x Pioneer dvd
Leadtek Gf3
Turtle beach sound
etc.... ect....

The Dvd and burner are on seperate cables alone and are set to master. I am also using ata 100 round cables if it makes a diff.

There are two versions of v1.01 (http://www.plextor.be/English/technical/downld_firmw_4012TA.html) available for the 40x. The self extracting version (579k) will run by itself, the smaller binary only version (170k) needs a Firmware installer (http://www.plextor.be/English/technical/downld_firmw_prog.html).

Plextor recommend that DMA be switched off & the PC rebooted prior to flashing the firmware.

DMA off
Reboot
Flash Firmware
DMA on
Reboot

Also you should shut down all other apps except systray & explorer & disable anything that could interrupt the process like screen savers, power savers & anti-virus software.

If you continue to have problems, return the drive.

Thanks for the info guys.
I did not have dma turned off as I did not have a tab in device properties to do so.
I realized that I needed to use the via IDE tool program to switch it off. Switched it off and it worked.
